Today I fixed my compressor, again.
3 hp motor, not starting and tripping the overload on the motor. (fortunately)
It did it before, so I was pretty sure it was the centrifugal switch.
Checked it out and found a high resistance across the switch.
Capacitor measured fine.
I cleaned the points and all works as it should .

Anybody know why the switch is burning out?
Was thinking of putting a relay across it.
Motor isn't even working that hard measures 10A with a clamp meter when running and 40 when starting.
I'll try and get a switch in stock for the next time anyway.

Thanks Aurther, I think I might even have one in stock.
Odd think is it ran absolutely fine for over 6 months after I cleaned the points the last time.
After 6 months they really need a clean.

I'll change the cap and see how it goes.

This set of Silver Salts came my way the other day.

But the mustard pot had lost it's Bristol Blue glass insert.

Step up a find today.

The replacement was aprox. 2mm too tall. A few minutes on a hand cranked wet stone had to the right size.

My Erbauer jig saw. Suddenly started operating intermittently when the trigger was pulled, so after battling with it for a while I pulled 20 screws out and flayed the insides open for inspection. Nothing obviously wrong, sprayed switch and other parts with contact cleaner and it worked, while in half.

Reassembled..... and nothing...

Stripped it apart again, fine emery on the commutator brush bits and sprayed out again. It worked while it was apart, when I gingerly messed the trigger.

I stripped it apart one more with the same result. This final time I whacked the whole thing hard on my vice..... and it works perfectly now.

It obviously recognised me as being the boss and has behaved for the last hour or so cutting aluminium sheet.

Fixed a reclining chair for an elderly neighbour, the power supply went rouge and a micro switch needed a blast of contact cleaner but the switches need changing as they both are very cheap feeling, so i will look for some better ones asap.

The old letterbox door held on right until the end. Two years isn’t bad for hardboard, the replacement is steel though - a bit sturdier. The numbers are always whatever scrap paint is floating around - blue for a change

Someone stole our letterbox a few years ago only to dump it a few blocks over, god only knows why. I made this box out of meranti marine ply, some roofing iron, old red insulated wire from the Colchester and hardboard, just in time for the post to arrive :P we did recover the old box but like our home-made contraption more.

Leaky camshaft solenoids on my M271. I suppose after 92,000 miles they've a right to, when all the info I can find says replace them at 80,000km.
A fairly straightforward job, and extension cables fitted at the same time to protect the harness from further leaks which can stuff the ECU.
Getting the little rubber bungs in the centres was a right ball ache.

No, I checked that, wiggled and pulled and pushed while holding the trigger in, nothing happened.

I have a feeling the problem is inside the trigger switch unit , but it doesn't seem to open up, no clips to pop it open with, that I could see. I'll let you know if I delve in again.

Fixed the bandsaw coolant system this week, new hose and a non return valve to stop it taking ages to get coolant on the cut when it starts up as its all drained back!

On my motors you re-arrange the jumpers in the terminal block to reverse direction. Often a little diagram in the lid.
