The author ,name forgotten, of " The art of course sailing" referred to sailing on the Broads not as mucking about in boats but boating about in muck.

One of the most fun sailin* weeks Ive ever had, a classic yacht in the Northern part of the broads. You could sit on the throne, have a shower and fry your bacon all at the same time. To stop yark it in the reeds.

Today. 20 minute job to fit new starter motor to a Hyundai Generator……turned into two butchered spanners and skinned knuckles. Why do our far easten friends make everything so “swear word of choice” awkward.

16mm AF heads, arghhhhh no short stubby spanner that size, couldnt get socket in. Ground out 15mm but couldnt get enough movement to turn spanner over and get a bit more. Then cut bannana spanner in half, too long to get any turn and ground ring down to fit.

Same day as me! If I ever meeet the retard that fitted a fuse box under a fuel filter so you have to spin the filter off to take the top off the fuse box I will beat him.

It was worse when I found the fuse hadn’t blown.

Gentlemen, I feel your pain, our engine supplier supplied a new engine a couple of years ago, from new, it had an issue with oil pressure, or more likely the sensor.

Utterly, utterly inaccessible, had to bend a 10mm spanner 90°, and then grind a lump out of the side, the company has photos on our database, makes a 30 min job, instead of a 3 or 4 hour job, what with taking bits off to get access.

Gentlemen, I feel your pain, our engine supplier supplied a new engine a couple of years ago, from new, it had an issue with oil pressure, or more likely the sensor.

Utterly, utterly inaccessible, had to bend a 10mm spanner 90°, and then grind a lump out of the side, the company has photos on our database, makes a 30 min job, instead of a 3 or 4 hour job, what with taking bits off to get access.

These ‘designers’ want violating with a rotating cactus.

Starter went on my vivaro just before crimbo. I got a new starter and looked at doing it but it required the whole front end of the van removing to access it! Stupid place to put something that is going to fail!
I think the designers should be made to strip and rebuild their prototype product before they release it, that would teach them!!

Renault Clio mk 1, once you've taken the wheel off, unbolted the starter motor, it will come out and out.

But will the new one go back in, no.

Spoke to the local retired garage owner, he said, yeah, you can get them out, but needed to drop the front driveshaft out the gearbox, to get them back in.

He was bloody right.

Scrapped a good Volvo 440, as the starter motor was basically unchangeable, sadly.

A Cat5e cable link.

Open Reach here yesterday to up grade us to Fibre to the Premises. Installer concerned drilling hole to bring fibre to where I wanted it (cupboard with all my network kit) saying too close to mains cable, OK it’s all of 6” away! So OK use an existing Cat5e wall socket that is cabled to my patch panel in said cupboard and is in a more convenient place for him.
I suggested we test the cable first as it’s not been active recently. He breaks the socket plugging in ! OK I give him a replacement insert, and have to lend him a Krone punch down tool (!) but 90 mins later he still hasn’t got the cable test running, is getting agitated and confused and wants to abort the upgrade, and leaves.

After supper I look at his cable end, find one core not properly punched down, and another where he’s cut the core about an in away from the slot (probably got the scissor bit of the tool wrong way round.) Fixed in 5 mins and test running OK

So I text him that cable is fixed and tests good and he returned today to finish the job.

What would have happened if I was an old doddery Granny instead of an old doddery Engineer?

I did a starter motor on a volvo 440 turbo once ! IIRC it took about a day and half most of it buy feel as you couldn't actually see it and it was on the street in november oh the joy

Inaccessible is an understatement, we even had a friendly Volvo mechanic, who did Saturday work on the side, he wouldn't go near it.

Takes 4 different technicians and months over here to drop a overhead cable into a computer.

1 The guys who deal with overhead lines, provide a cable.

2 Bloke who passes that cable through the wall to a special socket.

No, not finished.

3 We have to run cable to server box thing.

4 New bloke plumbs it all in.

2 - 3 months....

Was a few year old Bentley continental

W12 engine absolutely pig of a car to work on

^ I've read that if you're buying a cheap Bentley Continental, go for the W12 because the engine is pretty much un-burstable. It's everything else that goes around it that causes the trouble. Aren't they the ones with a water-cooled alternator that needs the engine dropping out to replace, and while it's out you'd be crazy not to do another couple of thousand pounds worth of work? I'd love one, I know someone who's recently bought a 2007 car. Must be mad.

It would make no difference as the better layout would increase the build cost by about 4p and the "bean counters" wouldn't allow it.

A friends son has just returned his £100.000 Tesla company car mainly due to E supply hassles but the killer was the blown indicator light thing that had to go to a registered Tesla dealer and took best part of a day and £1000.00 in parts to fix. He now drives a VW Touran with a 110.000 miles on the clock and is as happy as Larry. Don't ask who's Larry.

Clutch master cylinder on my daughters Mazda 3 Sport, not impressed, you have to take the clutch pedal out to change it, which means stripping out lots of the interior
