Okay, no sniggering at the back! I have determined that this winter I will not be taking a break when out in the fields just stting down on wet stone walls or even worse, wet grass.
So I have been looking at portable compact stools, like this for instance:

The only issue I have is that as far as I am concerned it is untried tech and I might be throwing twenty five quid away so am I better off with something a bit more traditional? Suggestions welcome.

I had sort of figured, The basic camping stool has been around for a long time and nobody has improved on it yet. The three legged X type stool has been around in South America for eons but does have a fundamental flaw in it's design so a variation of that which has four support points such as linked to by @magnet is a contender, shooting stick is good and I really need to try one, the real consideration though is as @marlinspike says, if I get in it, can I get back out whilst preserving my dignity and my back?
I suppose I also need to consider: is it easy enough for @Tinbasherdan to carry?

I couldn't sit on that stool for sny length of time. Wouldn't you be better with a portable camping chair that you can put in a cheap lightweight rucksack?

Are they strong enough, Magnet? That would be my main concern, that they might be a bit delicate for the more lardy amongst us. Also, are they low? I might get in one but might need an osteopath to get me out.

Yeah they are fairly low but mine is pretty substantial however I am of average build for bigger people they might be a squeeze space wise.

And it's okay. A bit low but plenty strong enough for my 12.5 stone. Not sure it would be any good on an uneven surface though.
I use it in the garage and at art fairs. Certainly better than sitting on the floor.

I had a real tree jacket made by Deerhunter which had a longer cut in the back and a massive pocket there so you could put a camping mat piece in there.

When you sat, you just made sure to tuck it under you. That worked well to be fair. Nothing to carry either.

Depends on the dress code I suppose.

The fore runner to the shooting stick is a charcoal burners stool. that only had one leg. When charcoal was/is made properly, the burner has to stay awake for a long time in case the burn got out of control. You have to balance on a one-legged stool. If you fall asleep. you 'drop off' hence the saying. 'Drop off to sleep'
