Stick out... Question..

Would I be correct in thinking, as a newby, that if I'm welding in the inner part of a 90 degree angle I need more stick out than I would for a butt weld? Eg to get the electrode close enough to the point of the weld ...

To be honest I'm never really sure how far out I should have the electrode sticking out..if at all... There doesn't seem to be any real system to it..

I'm sure I'm wrong, but is there a correct method..

Stick out will vary from joint to joint, and will depend on the diameter of the shroud, for fillets you can use a smaller shroud this will allow you to get into the corner without excessive stickout, smaller shrouds give less gas cover but fillets contain the gas, Its all here in the tutorial http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/tig-fillet-weld.htm

With Tig welding the trick is to keep that arc length short.
As Paul said certain joints are going to hinder this more than others but you should do what you can to keep it tight. You certainly should not to start increasing it intentionally. If you need to widen the arc or narrow the arc on DC the tungsten prep is the way to do it. Short arc length is key.
