I got the DigitTig 320P from @Tom Orrow L to trial out to make sure it would be man enough for the job I was needing it for, namely welding 12mm 5083 together to make up a davit for a boat. I normally weld them with the EWM Phoenix 355 Puls Mig but the skipper wanted it tig welded due to it being slightly neater (hopefully )
The welder is shop soiled or a demo or something like that and the only mark on it seemed to be a slight ding on the lower back corner of the casing, something I am not worried about, I don't mind these things as long as I get a wee bit of discount
So anyway I got the Stealth last week but only had the supplied WP26 torch so could not crank it up. I decided on 250Amps and gave it a short blast on a small piece of 12mm 5083.
Pic of the weld, the first bit I had the gas flow too low but after turning it up it seemed ok except underfilled as I only had 2.4 rods.
An etch of the weld below, shows that the 250Amps was not enough but it was better than I imagined it would be.
Today I managed to get back early to the workshop and I now had my WP18 torch hooked up so I could crank up the current.
The balance control is something I am not used to, it goes from -5 to +5 and no explanation in the manual as to which is which.
First I went with +2 and this was the result on a bigger chunk of 12mm 5083 than previously used. I also now have some 3.2mm 5356 rods and I wasn't having to try and feed as fast as with the 2.4's
I cooled off the Alu and then put the balance to minus 2 and tried again.
It seemed to be a bit more peaky on the weld so kind of like there was not quite the same heat but it was still fairly decent so further messing around will be needed.
I cut/etched the weld and this is the result. Left with balance +2, right with -2.
