Looking good. Stupid question, but I assume the carpets one piece? So how do they get it to play nice round the bend?

Do they come and measure up then cut a piece and stich the edges to suit or is there some magic to make a straight length fit round the curve?

We had to go and visit "Bob the binder" and chose a colour. He had an ancient sewing/binding machine that did this.

His binder looked like this but older.

Most carpet shops will edge a carpet, at a cost obviously, if you ask. I know a few people who have stained floorboards who liked a particular carpet pattern and had a large cut piece edged so it looked like a giant rug.

Those stairs look great. Well worth all the effort.

Totally irrelevant to the original post, but back in the mid 1990's when I was first married and we lived in RAF married quarters all of the carpets had 6" chopped off around the edge of the room and we're edged like that.

Fully fitted carpets we're for officers only, so us lowly types had to make do with a massive room shaped rug.

I'd hazard a guess and say that it probably cost considerably more to cut the edges off and have a sown edge put on than it would to just have the carpet fully fitted. But that was the rule at the time.

I remember when fitted carpets had bound edges and were located with steel washers sewn on the underside around the edge at about 2 foot center's - these washers then hooked over screw heads in the floor; the whole arrangement keeping the carpet fixed and "stretched".
Now....?

I’m looking to sort mine out as well. I’ve been toying with the idea of adding some glass panels instead of spindles, something like a cut string with glass balustrade or even a full floating oak look.

For anyone who does have glass on their stairs, is it a pain to keep clean? Fingerprints, dust, that sort of thing? Or is it more low-maintenance than it seems?

I found a few designs I really like here: https://uiservices.co.uk/bespoke-staircases/. The traditional cut string one with turned spindles also looks sharp.

daughter had a new rail and glass installed looked good and quite easy to keep clean but watch out for scraches once scrached thats it prob ok for a house with no kids but
