Mine were worse than this, shocking mess
in the end I went mad and bought a kit of parts to clad them in oak, cheaper than buying the oak in as plants and the edges were pre machined. Cut them to length and depth and glue over the old mess.Cames out damned fine if I say so myself.
Doing the 'winder' round the corner was scary but came out perfect.

Can you give me a ballpark cost for that materials for that please.

Isn't she back to doing all the hard work? I would have thought her shoulder would be better by now.
Stair rods also allow you to move the carpet when it wears, just remember to tuck some extra in.

First house I bought had a really nasty carpet badly fitted to the stairs, after nearly killing myself slipping down it once I thought I would remove the carpet even though I could not afford a new one. I removed the carpet to find a nicely varnished set of pine stairs underneath......result.
The house I'm now in I once decided it would be a good idea to strip all the skirting, door frames, picture rails, etc stain them then wax them. Roll on a few years and I decided I wanted them painted so cleaned it all and painted only after a short while to find the paint hadn't stuck well due to the wax, ended up having to strip it all again, clean it, zinsser prime it then top coat.Its stuck well now but lesson learned.

Priced up the cladding, will be about £1100, so forget that.

use oak vaneer plyboard 4mm 8x4 you will drop the price down really well as thats fitted to the riser piece

its your tread board you would have to consider better

Tried Klingstrip? I've stripped banisters, fireplaces, ornate panelling and alsorts with this. Pricey but it does the work for you.

Cover it with clingfilm and let it do the work

Had a day off yesterday then finally finished the striping today. Lots of filling and sanding next.

Planning to use Toupret wood filler unless someone has a better suggestion. There must be at least 50 tack holes per tread.

Hard work but a great job and Toupret I use all the time.

You should ask your Mrs how long her Granny dreamed of a fitted carpet to get rid of the runner and rods!

Such a pain to clean properly with cats so I'm going back to carpet when I can be bothered.
