Sprinter van coolant pressure

Now my mate has two sprinters about the same year as yours and one of his is doing exactly the same, the sniff test shows no combustion gasses in the water but I have now been told these are not 100%?
They have been the most unreliable vehicles he has ever owned!

Errm, well if I was to take the cap off from stone cold it would hiss as I take the cap off, I'm not sure how to answer the question properly as I don't know?
I don't know if I'm being paranoid but I thought it had dumped a load of water this morning from cold? I backed down the street and there was a trail?

That hiss is probable vacuum from it cooling down coz you have water missing from header, with the cap on let it stand and rev it up hard several times whilst holding the top hose if you can feel pressure building it is most prob head gasket ps sniff tests are not always conclusive on diesels because they take so much air in each stroke and therefore run weaker than petrols, and the gases are slightly different

The heads off to be pressure tested and skimmed now

^^^ That was my first thought. For that sort of turn around Woody must be on very good terms with his engine shop.

good result, it was looking as though HG was the culprit from your description and no crack in the head is even better

Good result, and if it drives good as you say least its done and sorted so you can feel happy its going to be reliable from here on in.good job you cracked on with it.

We can have them stripped and rebuilt within a shift if a new head with pre lapped valves is fitted due to a cracked head.
Also I did tell you about the gasket blowing into the water jacket, the sniff test only works when the head gasket has gone for quite a while in my experience.

You did indeed, I've worked on one or two different engines over time but this is a first for me, they don't seem too bad to work on other than the order some bits come off in.

They are a doodle pal, especially your engine.
The newer 2.2's the 646 and the 651 are quite a bit harder, especially the 651 as all the timing is at the rear of the engine.

snif tests lie on diesels anyway, it sniffs for CO aka carbon monoxide diesels are lean burn and if the engine desing is any good there should be bugger all CO for it to sniff anyway

anyway seems like your cracking on and nearly have it done

@Johnseat , what oil go's in these ? I've had 3 different answers now!
My oil book says 5/40, Mercedes say 15/40 and my parts shop say 10/40.
It's done 17000 and the engine looks fresh, there are still cross hatching in the bores

he must be pretty unlucky, they're pretty well accepted as the most reliable vans you can get!

While you're in there ask if there are supposed to be any valve sping seats as I haven't taken any out but different pics from off the internet show them? Including Haynes

OH yes well gone on those fire rings !! lucky it skimmed !
If it was I, whilst in there I'd be fitting a new chain... split it and join and pull the new one through and round the crank also new head bolts as the old ones can be a pain for the drive slipping, oh and copper slip them well too.
