The pukka job for spraying anything out of the ordinary is an airless spray. Not the little ones though. Proper industrial jobbies. Not cheap to buy but can be hired. They work like a pressure washer - and spray at about 2000psi. No misting as they don't use air. They are just as quick as a pressure washer - it's what they use for painting ships or buildings.

Chris (CLH let's me borrow his whenever, Wagner 350M) so no need to hire. However @8ob lent me one of his son's a few years back when I was doing the workshop. I had no end of trouble with that because of the small particles in the Weathershield. I suspect it will be the same with limewash.
I had a small filter available for my spray gun and Chris' Wagner has a similar filter so will likely get plugged. We can try it but my experience with Bob's was one the airless become plugged they're an absolute sod to unplug. I ended up having to back clean all the filters by hand under a water spray and even then running neat water took some doing to clear it (think it was about 3h total I spent trying to clear it).
To be honest the little spray gun is perfectly adequate, we could do as suggested long term and have the gun pressure fed but for now it's not really worth it. Maybe some vibratory mixer on a 50 gallon drum with airlines and pumps going up the boom of the cherry picker at a later date.
In the mean time the ECU is mounted into the 6x6 so next job is wiring harness.

I'm actually quite enjoying this one. I've just sheeted up the floor with a DPM to catch any drops, the windows don't need masking up because you can just hose them off and sponge them down afterwards.
It's also finding someone competent and available. The trouble with limewash more so than other painting is the timing. It's easier for me to whack on a coat in a morning because I live and work here as opposed to chasing up people and to be honest I'm bloody fed up of doing that.

I agree with issues finding folk to do work and competent…nightmare. No one seems to want to work these days. I asked a firm to price for some work….4 weeks later he turns up to do the survey…..6 weeks still no price.

That's why I went pointing not rerendering - there simply wasn't a firm that could pull in a big enough team of skilled plasterers (partocularly with lime) to do it because the walls are so vast.
Thankfully I've now got a very good carpenter and roofer who's fast, cheap and good - also rather conveniently is my neighbour. He's always busy but if he says he's coming he's coming. He'll also drop things to do emergency stuff.
Got a similar chap who's a general builder but the those projects tend to be a little bigger so more difficult to schedule in for him but if they're quick jobs then he can usually fit them in pretty quickly.
Too expensive though for painting.

That is still basically a hobby machine. The ones I am talking about are designed for spraying heavy metal filled epoxies and tar like coatings onto ships.
They have very hefty motors - 38L a minute flow rates and up to 7000 psi. Various nozzle sizes - obviously bigger is better for stuff you are spraying.
Not cheap to buy - £5k upwards - but can be hired for not too much. I bet you would be finished in a few hours with one of these.
I did think of hiring one to do my trailer - epoxy paints are best used with these but will brush and roller instead.My painting job a tad smaller than your

Ive seen those used to spray intumescent coatings, and various epoxy paints on ships/ oilrigs. The intumescent stuff is particularly gloopy.That is still basically a hobby machine. The ones I am talking about are designed for spraying heavy metal filled epoxies and tar like coatings onto ships.
They have very hefty motors - 38L a minute flow rates and up to 7000 psi. Various nozzle sizes - obviously bigger is better for stuff you are spraying.

Yeah, about 20 years ago I got roped in to lending a hand limewashing a piggery.
Used a heavy duty sprayer and it went quick enough.
Only thing, be careful where the run-off goes - limewash splashes combined with sweat can trickle down gauntlets and burn your skin. If I were doing it again, I'd use long veterinarian gloves.

Few hours you say... Started about 0945 this morning and finished about 15 minutez ago. 4.5h to do a coat on my own and that including bringing the compressor out, making and rigging up 2 airline extensions, stirring the limewash and decanting into milk bottles. Yeah it could be quicker again but to be honest it doesn't need to be a morning is plenty quick enough for a coat given the size of it.
Maybe a larger hopper might be nice but the it's more heft and with the milk bottle to hand it's a few seconds to refill.
Nice to see you using traditional materials and not some rubbish that seals damp into the walls.
I follow things like this with interest as I may just be daft enough to take on a similar project! Love your place.
The chap down in the village last limewashed his house during the start of COVID and just put another coat on, so about 4-5 years which is what the manufacturers were saying would be pushing the modern alternative. I think I worked out we needed about 100 gallons to do the 1/2 of the house we've repointed so far. Projected cost of the paint was north of £10k I think, plus then actually getting it on there.
I spoke with Ty Mawr about their ready made limewash and about whether I could get a discount given the volume. Chap said of course and then quietly said have you thought about making your own? He then phoned a friend in the company and verbally told me the recipe for the wash they make. I was actually just about to set off to Brecon to pick up some quicklime from them when I thought I'd call in at the local builders merchant down the road. They had most of a pallet of quicklime left over from a job (Tarmac lime rather than Ty Mawr). The boss then phoned up their rep and got them to confirm it could be used.
To date the 6 bags required to do the 4 coats on the house so far have cost £36. Roughly a bag to 3/4 of a 50 gallon drum of water so pennies in water. A huge saving.
The spray gun seems to be working quite well. Tomorrow is going to be the real test as its looking like a good day for it again. Longer term I've got a 16.5m cherry picker which once I fix a few things I bentand get the 6x6 running will make things easy. I was planning on running a mains cable, pressure washer line and airline up to the basket with fittings down on the deck. That way things can be plumbed in easily for maintenance on the house.
Maybe I should do this rather than electronics... In fact the fiancé looked quite keen on trying the spraying so maybe it can be more profitable for her to do that than nursery work

I can imagine. Before I bought this building project, I looked at an old manse, really nice place, all the origional features including Mouseman wood work. Grade two listed. While in the attic/ servants rooms, I looked out of the skylights at the large lead gulleys in between the pitched roofs, missing slates galore all in the gulleys……from inside day light everywhere, wet timbers, rotten timbers, various damp patches etc, Im not roofing expert but it needed replacing.It's not complicated!

Run away I did quickly. Shame it had great outbuildings.

Ours was perfectly habitable when I moved in but let's just say people cut corners badly in the past and stuff started creeping out.
The roof is pretty sound but they will need redoing at some point in the future. The massive saving grace is this is not listed. It is bloody handy having Tom next door as he's a good roofer.
We're actually considering when the south facing ones need redoing to do them in slate effect box profile
. The reason being unless you are above the house or in our vegetable garden you can't see them. The second reason (because you can't see them) is to cover them in solar panels so what's the point in spending the money for the slate. Well I've actually got about 10t of second hand Welsh slate to go through in crates but unless we win the lottery (difficult when we don't play) there's better stuff to spend money on.

Build the panels into the roof. Saves on slate, especially if you are going over 4 k with batteries. Panels just have like a velux flashing kit around them.
