Spray gun

what's a good spray gun for a hobbiest ? I'm only going to be painting bits on a old car, wings etc, I don't want the cheap £10 ones, I have a fast mover 4001 that was given me, but it don't look very good, but I'm not sure as new to it.

Any advice please, I'm looking at using cellulose paint

I wouldnt like to do a whole car with one but I`m certainly not saying you cant, looking at it, it has many similarities to similar guns I have from Aerograph MP/MPS and similar Devilbis, but they go back to days when Celly ruled the roost, options were coach enamel, fleet enamel. In todays market if you upgrade then you must consider HVLP. I`ve done dozens and dozens of cars with celly, was nowt wrong with it 35 odd years ago, but times change and products improve, However I confess to spraying a litre of Ford Diamond white celly, just in the last 3 weeks.

Ideally you need to practise on a scrap door or similar metal, read the instructions of the paint you are using, be familiar what the knobs on the gun do, how turning the cup can help, expect to thin it 50/50, possibly even 70 thinners 30 paint for a couple of top coats, dont use crap cheap thinners if you want a good top shiny finish off the gun- it can be done. But not with gun wash, dismantle and clean the gun scrupulously every time you use it, like me 40 + years later they will still work. Practise just how much or how little you can spray with out runs, test how different it is to do a bonnet or worse a roof. However my first choice now would be HVLP-even with celly.

No shame in being ignorant, the shame lies when you are not willing to learn-- and your never to late with sufficient enthusiasm. The last celly I got came from Ireland, and I`ve had a lot of stuff off Fiona Mcgowan, a litre of Ford Diammond white £10.19 + P/P was still cheaper than anything I found in the UK and local factor couldnt touch the price.

Ureka is a day like today, warm, fine, good temp to spray, celly is not good for DIY in winter.

I've never overthinned cellulose for last coats, just use good quality nitro thinners for a shiny finish 50/50 same as the spec sheet says. Only thing I achieved with overthinning was runs and a dry finish from trying not to get runs. I use a cheap HVLP gravity gun and a mini touch up gun and I have a Sealey Gold which all work fine and give good results.

It depends on your compressor, hvlp will be no good unless you have a huge one. You can get lvlp guns now from fast mover for under 40 quid.

Be honest, the silver fox era and the infux of metallics was a nightmare, so many things affected the colour, heat, humidity. God,I bet i still have Tawney metallic No2 Mk3s, Walnut Mk5s some blue stuff and a nice maroon/deep red.+ Ford had variations of the same colour, However booths and paint supply options, guns, breathing gear etc like everything they have improved beyond comprehension.
YES It was a great match-- to Crown brilliant white, it was for a door I did up for my daughter. Heres after and before. matches the frame and skirtings!!!!

I hope ttwlr won't mind me hijacking his thread, but i want to buy a lvlp detail gun to use to spray 2k on motorcycle parts. It needs to be small to get between frame rails and the like. Don't mind spending a few bob, but can't reach the iwata and devilbiss price levels. What tip size would i need and what gun should i spring for ?

I don't know about LVLP.
I painted some push bike frames and I got a pair of fastmover guns, but they are so badly made I didn't even try them!

I was told the Draper expert mini gut is a decent gun, I picked up a draper expert mini gun and the not-expert draper mini gun as pair on ebay. I was quite impressed with them, they sprayed ok and I was able to manouvre the gun between tubes without any trouble. I just ignored the "For Waterbased Paint Only" sticker;-)

I used to spray everything with a JGA, these little guns are so nice to use and you don't waste so much paint.

I have two compressors, one is large and the other a small one. What i want to do is use the small one for the gun and the large for the airfed mask. So the gun needs to be pretty frugal with the air.

They didn't just paint the outside, it looks like they dipped them in paint.
The boxes don't say anything about avoiding paint or gunwash!
All the threads are so loose I doubt it's going to put up with much use before falling apart.

My devilbiss sri pro is very low air useage, decent fan size when open and good finish. Bought mine brand new never used for £130 so bargains are about if timing is lucky

Interesting. Mine are all anodised and look and feel like any other gun. One of them had parts that had been overtightened but that was easily sorted. A pure enquiry caused a brand new complete gun to be sent to me, gratis. I was very impressed. Needs about 20Lbs at the gun, although I do wind it up a bit for the epoxy.
