88 on a motorway is a victimless crime. if they raised the speed limit to 80, as they were discussing and falling line with the rest of europe , you wouldent even be pulled over for it.

I wouldn't argue with you, but to be clear it IS a crime still and to say it isn't really is nonsense. In the interest of total transparency I was once "done" on the M62 for doing 82mph. It was four in the morning and the coppers said they had followed me for ten miles.

Sadly many people don't moderate their speed according to conditions and traffic density. Nobody would expect that it would be safe to fly through town at 70mph but if you left it to the drivers to judge what's safe that's what a lot of them would do. Hence, we have a lot of 20 and 30 limits.

Yeah, as Seadog says, I think this is rubbish - it went all over social media a few months back. I drive at least a quarter of the M25 multiple times a week and they only go off is if the speed limit restrictions are up - they do work then though so be careful if a limit is up!

To the OP, I think I would just be honest. I am no expert, but 88 on a motorway would surely just be three points and a fine? Years ago thats all I got for 88 on the M4 in Wales - could have changed since then. I cant see why it needs a summons and isnt just a fixed penalty.

The M25 camera def go off even when the variable limit isn't working. They are not set to 72mph though - you have a 10% tolerance although some chief constables want zero tolerence/maximum fines!

Now you say it I think you are right but you have to be going pretty quick. A car came past me and must have been doing over a ton and the side ones went off. The overhead ones dont seem to do anything unless the limits are up.

It was a top one that nearly had me. I was very lucky. I was passing several cars at a pretty high speed - an idiot came tearing up behind me at an even faster rate and locked onto my back bumper. It was him who got flashed even though it was me who triggered it!

For those busting to know. The recorded speed was 88 in a 70. Not the crime of the century but more than 20% over. As a pro driver doing an average of 75k per annum, points can so easily be accumulated so best avoided if poss.

When I used to ply the highways and by-ways of that fair land, I found an indicated 85mph was the best compromise. Going faster burnt more fuel and didn't make much (if any) difference to journey times and also tended to attract attention. 85mph was just about fast enough to make decent progress without standing out from the herd. I checked that speedo for accuracy and found it was only a couple of percent fast, so probably 83mph in reality.

I find the same. Driving in Germany on unrestricted autobhans I expected everyone to be driving like maniacs but speeds the same as the UK. I was cruising about 90 to 95 and only 3 cars passed me.

Here, in the SE corner of Ireland, the motorway sections are quite unemcumbered with traffic and most people just get on them and boot it, even grannies and school-run-mums, commonly zipping along at 90mph. In fact, I was sitting at my old comfortable speed of 85 and they were all whizzing past me. The limit is 75mph, not that it makes much difference.

Surely the bit about clocking you at 72 can't be true,...the speedo's on most vehicles are not that accurate to start with, 2 mph is hardly a margin.

Type approval doesn't allow speedos to under-read by any margin. They can over-read by up to 10%, so any error in the speedo would cause it to read a higher speed than you are actually doing. My works van over-reads by 5% as reported by GPS.

On my last works van the speedo over-read by about 8% but the OBD2 feed for road speed was bang on according to my datalogger.

IIRC the 70 mph limit on motorways was set at the same time as 50 on "de-restricted" main roads as a fuel saving measure during one of the oil crises. The limit was later raised to 60 on dual carriageways, but kept at 70 on motorways.

It is 70 on dual carriageways where national speed limit is applied.

No you don't have 10% tolerance. The speed is the speed. Now if some police forces choose to allow a margin that is another thing. Whether a judge would both to convict you for doing 31mph in a 30 is another thing = probably would let you off.

BUT the 10% being law is a myth.

My sincere apologies to the original poster but I am unlikely to let this drop. I am not fond of the "make the law up as you go along" brigade. Either the general public OR the Police.

Where does it end? It's okay to do 88, or 90, maybe 92? This is just your opinion but until the law gets changed you are (technically) breaking the law at 71mph. You start making the law up to suit yourself and where would this end? Anarchy I think it's called.

The SMART cameras recently activate on the M25 which are found to the left of the gantries have been active for some time on the M1, a friend got a ticket through the post a few months ago at 73mph.
