The Ivans weren't slow in relocating Ukranian John Deeres a couple of years ago. Opinion at the time was that JD would have no trouble disabling the stolen vehicles, but I suspect there are suffiently clever Ivans to counteract that.

One project I worked on the chip used for doing the design on earth was circa £300. To get one that was representative of the space variant but could only be used for testing on earth was £85k per chip. The ones built to actually go in space were "let us know and we'll find out the cost of interrupting the fab plant's production to build your handful of chips".

Istr NASA or some other agency were keen on finding unused 486 chips a few years ago, might have been something to do with the larger internals being more cosmic ray resistant.

Believe the police list (or at least used to list)where the van will be in the weekly rag around here. Nothing too precise mind.

Don't rely on GPS for accurate speed determinations right now. There's a severe, category G4, geomagnetic storm on at the moment (0930BST). 10 minutes ago, my satnav thought it was about 100metres from where I was. It's drifted back to being nearer the actual location, but it could just as easily drift off again. Expect some very confused taxis, and couriers, over the next few hours!!

I dunno - if you and your kids live in a village with clowns rmapaging through at high speed, a 20 limit and several cameras would probably feel like a good idea?

Just a normal 30 speed limit and a couple of cameras would work as well, without the 20mph tedium.
Or like we have in a village near me, average speed camera through the whole village. That keeps people nice and slow.

The 20mph limit on my commute in on a morning was apparently campaigned for by local residents. It adds a whole extra minute to my commute. It's not a problem. Now I wouldn't like the entire route to be 20mph, but for the part passing a primary school, a nursery, several pubs, housing etc, it's going to be a bit safer, a bit better for residents.

It reverts back to a 30 limit - where I was passed by come clown on an electric bike, using the pavement, followed by a leap into the road in front of me.

I got busted for speed on my bike at a traffic light in Telford/Wellington area. The photo showed me halfway across a junction, showing my speed, 36, and the time since the light had gone amber, and how many milliseconds until it would have been red.

So, multi purpose fixed camera.

The lights had gone amber when I was about 30 feet away, with a mate on a bike behind me. Split second decision; hit the brakes, maybe have my mate run up my chuff, or twist the throttle and beat the red. I chose throttle.

I did the opposite in the 70's, lights went amber and as there was plenty of time/distance to stop I did, next thing my bike was punted forward a foot or so and my mates riderless bike slid past on my right while he slides past on the left, he stands up and said "I thought you were going to run the lights" he thought wrong

The GPS satellites aren't used for sending information to devices. They "simply" broadcast an extremely accurate time signal which can be used by devices to calculate where in the world they are.

Sat phones could be used but they're not cheap. The fact is it still (last time I was involved) costs $1m/kg to send something to space. That's just simply the transport bill... They send an accurate time signal AND their own orbital position data.

The receiver combines both bits of info from multiple satellites to work out its own position.

Seem to recall a story about one of the first to be done - a Granada locked up, sliding through the red light, smoke from all wheels. Done for the red light trangression . . and for defective brakes. That model had ABS . . .

I stopped for a red light in a 30 yr old Triumph Dolomite Sprint . . and watched the van behind me have to swap to the turn right lane so as not to mate with the rear.

The oem manufacturers need to step up here. They all seem too happy to sell the unfortunate victim a 10k gps replacement rather than making them obsolete and worthless if removed. Or as they are in that business traceable and recoverable if stolen.

Doesn't help that the recievers are in brightly coloured domes stuffed up on the roof advertising their availability to the light fingered scouting around of course.

JCB (& other machinery brands) have "upsold" their GPS Trackers to customers for years (they try to make the dealers buy them & charge them on).
A bit like Smart Electricity Meters - the spiel the punter gets is that you can set both "quiet times" (when the machine should be inactive) & "geo-fencing" so you can set virtual perimeters & get alerted if the machine moves outside the area set. It's pointed out that they can disable the machine for you.

What they DON'T say ... is what you said. The primary reason for the unit (which they want YOU to pay for).... is the total control over your machine that they retain. Its primary purpose is to protect their payments (Note that there is "JCB Finance" - a Co Owned Finance Broker that does the loan agreements for a great deal of the Plant Sales) - NOT to safeguard your machinery. On top of that, they track the running hours so they can "helpfully" contact you when the machine is due a service - and of course try to corner your aftermarket business.

(Theoretically.... not only can the Mfr disable a machine instantly if there's a monthly payment glitch.... but could also "introduce" system faults and failures. IMO there are plenty of reasons to distrust the motivations & indeed policies & actions of any/all big corporation electronics, software & tracking, & the "intellectual property" arguments that allow Mfrs to retain full control& access to YOUR posessions).

It quickly becomes a nuisance when a huge part of your journey is 20mph when it used to be 30 because even though the speed is only reduced by 1/3, the time it now takes is increased by 1/2 (20mph is 2/3 of 30mph but 30mph is a mile in 2 minutes where 20mph is a mile in 3 minutes).

I do between 10-12,000 miles a year and I'd say that at least 1/3 of it is 20mph where it used to be 30. So (potentially) 4000 minutes added to my journey every year, that's 3 whole days of extra travelling, sitting in traffic, engine running in their fancy clear air congestion zone, every year.

Now I fully agree that some zones need to be carefully managed for risk - outside schools, around rail/underground stations, high streets etc where the footfall is high or there are kids about, but to slap a blanket 20mph on entire boroughs "just because" is just madness, in my opinion.

Rural France had the same system I believe. Clever, because people just don't speed, as its faster to not trigger the red light & the waiting time. No fines and Scamera nonsense, just joined-up thinking that is a genuine asset to safety.

They also had an extra set of small lights halfway up the traffic pole... so when you're at the front of the queue right by the traffic light - you had an easy view of the lights status. A nice sensible touch.

These things are all over the place in London for the cyclists, they add an extra phase to the lights so everyone is just sat at a red light for longer. Of course all the cyclists have already ******** off as they don't think they need to stop at a red light...

On the other hand, they can fix some of them remotely, mate of mine had something wrong with the hydraulics on some sort of tractor. Basically doing nothing,
Tech support on the phone (probably a subscription warranty service mind)
They managed to do remote diagnostic tests while he sat in it, figured out it was the switch not working, sent a software update to the tractor to male a different switch activate the bit he wanted to use.

Although, if it didn't have a fancy joystick controller and a touchscreen it probably wouldn't have broken anyway.
When you had hydraulics on levers it was easy just to swap enough stuff around to keep you running with just an adjustable spanner..
