guy up the road from me got caught doing 40 in the 30 limit he took it to caught and got off with it much to the horror of the old bill the 40 mph went to 30 mph with signs on roadside . the night he got nicked he went and unbolted the 30 signs and flung em went to court and won his case as he thought it was 40 mph was obvious realy he only lived a mile up the road but they couldnt prove it . now they photograph the signs the day they set the cameras up

The gps systems on tractors these days are accurate to less than 1" with year on year repeatability. How they work most companies charge a yearly subscription but it is possible to get the accuracy through your mobile using data.

The oem manufacturers need to step up here. They all seem too happy to sell the unfortunate victim a 10k gps replacement rather than making them obsolete and worthless if removed. Or as they are in that business traceable and recoverable if stolen.
Roumer has it that at least one manufacturer can immobilise their harvester through the sat nav if purchase payments haven't been met yet can't actually switch off the sat nav.
Doesn't help that the recievers are in brightly coloured domes stuffed up on the roof advertising their availability to the light fingered scouting around of course.

not much chance that the old bill or anyone else would spend any money to get them back like trackers on plant hire machines if they cant stop them before they leave the country there gone for good along with expensive cars

Anyway back to speeding, someone said not accelerating to 40 till past the 40 sign from a 30 zone. Fair enough but the other way are you supposed to stand on the brakes at the 30 sign from a 60 zone. If so the guy behind slows early then the one behind that even earlier till the car a dozen back in the que comes to a complete stop on a 60 mph max road. Sounds like a recipe for a domino effect accident.

No but the insurance company or manufacturer should. Just like the stolen car insurance market. They all just seem to accept it is happening and pass on the cost in extra premium.
But if the stolen gps was made useless there wouldn't be an international market in stolen goods reducing the price for everyone.

No, you’re supposed to react to seeing the 30 sign and be doing 30 or less by the time you reach it, the same as everyone else following you. Pretty simple stuff really. If you slam the brakes on when you go from one speed limit to a slower one then you should probably have a good think about your driving style.

The GPS satellites aren't used for sending information to devices. They "simply" broadcast an extremely accurate time signal which can be used by devices to calculate where in the world they are.

Sat phones could be used but they're not cheap. The fact is it still (last time I was involved) costs $1m/kg to send something to space. That's just simply the transport bill... One project I worked on the chip used for doing the design on earth was circa £300. To get one that was representative of the space variant but could only be used for testing on earth was £85k per chip. The ones built to actually go in space were "let us know and we'll find out the cost of interrupting the fab plant's production to build your handful of chips".

So poodling along just exiting a corner this road is 30mph and next sign is 40mph , so technically I am still in 30 zone as I come around the corner I notice what I thought to be some one with a theodalite but no one else about and no signage , realised then its a speed camera ..to late ,as I have just been notified I was doing 36 in the 30 zone , I was under the impression signs had to be put out ? anyways clocked the van snuck up around the corner out of site as I went past and the consequence I have just recieved a speeding ticket . My first offence ever @ 70 year old ! damn . I was of the understanding that everything was meant to be clearly insight rather than catching you as you exit a corner ? advice please, not saying I was nt speeding just want to know if it was done correctly .thanks

Sadly just another of their "honeypot" traps. I have had the same. You would think that any danger for that stretch would result in better signage, but no; Kerching.
I think the attitude is that unless you have passed a sign to the contrary, it is 30MPH regardless of how clearly ridiculous it is.

First time you should get an invitation to a "Speed awareness course" which involves a Green Meanie berating you with his fact that 1MPH over the arbitrarily set limit is as serious as knifing pedestrians. You will have to bite your lip and not try to interject with any common sense or you will get a direct threat to not be signed off as completed. Thought Police at their finest.

Nothing ridiculous about it and nothing to do with my driving style. Was just thinking about these posts above and what would happen if everyone responded exactly to the letter of the law but from the opposite side.
I can think of at least one 20mph zone on the local to me main 60mph trunk road with no warning from the last slight bend/dip then rise to the 20 signs. Sign's not visible till the last minute and strangers will come across the Sign's quite suddenly and need to slow down sharpish to obey the law. If that's the lead in a convoy then you get the situation as described above as often happens on the motorway.
As it happens the authorities have stuck up 2 of those speed readout boxes a couple of hundred yards apart to remind you but a petrol station exit just inside the zone can make things exciting at times.

No idea how they work but the mainline manufacturers of these things i believe charge up to £1k for an unlock code for a year's use. Why can't they block their own codes and make the boxes useless to anyone else?

I dunno - if you and your kids live in a village with clowns rmapaging through at high speed, a 20 limit and several cameras would probably feel like a good idea?

And I drive a car with a sillily big engine and enough oomph and gears to get well north of double the motorway limits . . tickover in 6th breaks the 30 limit . . . so I'm not against a bit of making progress - the problem being all those who choose to do it in silly places.
