Hark at all you connisseurs, Id happily rehome most of the things being pointed to in this thread if I could find a way to get em here!
Ive got a vice with heavy marks beneath the work area, it was cheap so dont care. The only annoyance is its difficult to set parallels true so one day I will fill the pits with braze and machine it plane. Apart from that, dont care about cosmetics!
That spider made from a hydraulic pipe nut is a pishtake though.

How does that happen! The vice that came with my milling machine has a few slits cut into the top of the jaws, not quite that bad but the mind still boggles.

Its a case of not setting the depth of cut or can't be ars*d settings....seen it done in my training workshop and the trainee being booted out of the course.
