Right Click!!! I always wondered what I was supposed to do when I got a dotted red line. Thanks Malc (and Bucko for starting it and Wozz for the links..which I didn't need but didn't realise till I'd already downloaded it! ..does annoy me tho' that it wants me to spell in American rather than English..can I change the dictionary? How? pretty please).

For Firefox browser there's a choice to set Browser language in tools > options > advanced > languages > select English/United Kingdom [en-gb] With that set Woz's link pointed me straight towards the British English Dictionary under tools > add-ons.

I don't know the answer for Internet Explorer, but a good start would probably be tools > internet options > general > languages > add > select English (United Kingdom) [en-GB] then click the move up button so it appears at the top of the list.

Of course international members are welcome to use their own version of English.

According to what I added the other day (to Firefox/Mac), it IS the English/British Dictionary but I'm still getting red dotty lines under 'colour' etc and can't find the menu you suggest Malc. All I have under tools is 'Web search, Downloads, Add-ons, Error consols, Page Info and Clear private Data". Add-ons shows which dictionary I have but the Preferences button in that window doesn't do anything.
**sigh** never mind, I know when I'm being told to correct perfectly good English spelling for sloppy US so I can just ignore it. It IS nice to be able to correct the spelling I get stuck with without having to type the offending word into an email!

Ratty. You know that Macs have a built in spell checker so you shouldn't need a plugin? At least the latest OS does. I'm afraid I can't remember where the setting for British English is but I'll have a look for you when I get back to my computer. It could be in System Prefs, International. Then again it may not!

Hey Archie...no I didn't know that, it would explain why I always got dotty lines under odd words even before I downloaded the dictionary. I just checked sys. pref. internat. and my preferred language WAS Eng. I also found I could choose the language for displaying web pages in Firefox preferences (content) and switched the order so English (en) takes precedence over English/US (en-us) but...that makes no difference (not that I expected it would but thought it worth a try). Just out of curiousity I'd be interested to know how to suppress the US prompting! (and oddly I have just been pulled up on 'curiousity' (yup and again) and when I asked to check spelling it simply removed the red line without changing the word )...so I have just checked the spelling in a hard copy dictionary and sure enough..it's wrong, doesn't have the 'U' so..here goes..curiosity.. Ha. So that is right and the dictionary knows it is right so how comes it didn't correct it or at least show me what it should be? Rubbish I call it, I have an English dictionary which prefers US spelling and furthermore, knows when I've spelt a word completely wrong but has no idea what the spelling should be.
Um.....you know what? just got pulled up on 'spelt' which I know is correct and when I looked to see what the dictionary was going to suggest..I discovered that in the little pop-up menu I can change the dictionary from US to Eng. Is there a smiley with a light-bulb flashing?
Incidentally - the US suggestions for 'spelt' were slept, pelt, pelts, smelt and spent. Oh boy - I can see why being dyslexic must be a nightmare even with spellcheck.

Yeah you're in the right place. Malcolm's organising a spelling bee in the summer. No spell check allowed though!

So sounds like you've got it sorted then. If you still get problems it could be that the Firefox and Apple dictionaries are having a bit of a pow-wow. That's just a guess. I don't use Firefox.
