I have been banging on about this for years. The male of the species is fundamentally crap.

We all have our 'things' mine are sculpture, bicycles, dodgy music etc. None of these 'things' are any use really, most people dont really understand them. Occassionaly we meet another initiate who does and it is like a brotherhood.
This thread is a way of expressing this.

But I'm known to look at old buildings, particularly old industrial sites.

You'd enjoy the navy base at Portsmouth then: several of the buildings have their construction year carved in the stones - 1846 on at least one of them and still in daily use! Fantastic brickwork and iron framing inside that just wouldn't be done nowadays. No doubt one day it'll all be ripped down and replaced with some tin-clad portal frame with a 25 year design life...

Just recently I've made a delivery or two to Cannon Street railway station in London. The "building" has a life span of 25 years. From the top of the facilities block you can gaze upon St Paul's cathedral. At well over 200 years old, what did we know then that we don't know now??

And my lovely little farm cottage was built in 1855, when Victoria was a mere boy......

do you eat meat? there is no intention to maime, only to provide a clean and humane kill in order to provide food.

the only difference between me and a farm specifically breeding animals for the food market is that the animals I harvest have lived a natural and full life rather than being kept in cramped conditions, being fed artificial foods and then lead in one by one to be killed, but overall the outcome is the same, food on a plate

Do you really think that I would? In the 21st century, there is no need for it. There is especially no need for anyone to be out in public toting a device which has no other purpose than to cause harm.

I do not wish to take this post away from its theme, we will never agree with each other. I do what I do because i can see the difference made by the control of pests. i do not merely shoot pests for fun, i eat anything that is healthy at the time of death (bar rats).

it is basic food chain, since the dawn of mankind, man has been the hunter/gatherer. I see health benefits to eating such lean meats as rabbit and pigeon

Many activities that used to be commonplace have been done away with. I'm sure that there are still people who believe that cave dwelling behaviour like bear baiting and beating up women is perfectly normal too.

Those who take the lives of animals for fun are just a tiny step away from doing the same to their fellow man, killing is in the character. As for pests, who says a species are pests? Such arrogance when Mankind is probably the worst pest of any species.

people should be able to differ. I am not a shooterist, I do eat meat.
I have no problem with people doing most field sports. The English countryside is to a very large part managed with this in mind, and is a very beautiful place.
Lots of woodlands are managed for shooting, without it they would be either grubbed up or become jungles no use to man nor beast. We live in a managed landscape.
This a forum that survives wonderfully without people criticising each other.
Lets keep it that way.

farmers losing profits, the BASC (a conservation society), even the RSPB denote certain birds as pests, as does the country side alliance with regards to foxes, certain geese, some deer also.

the law is clear in what is considered a pest also, there is a general license to allow the cull of pest birds.

without the containment of pest species there would be very little in the way of any decent countryside left for people to enjoy, there would be hardly anything left in the way of rabbits (as foxes would have most certainly made them extinct) and there would be very little in the way of a sustainable environment for crops to grow

Those arguments are bunkum BB. Nature took care of itself perfectly well long before our species started screwing the countryside up. However, our own opinions are irrelevant. Lets allow this thread to remain open shall we ladies?

I agree, the countryside is a complex thingummy, it needs managing.
