I have a load of contenders in my life…. I cut off the top of my right index finger falling off a combine wheel whilst cleaning out a radiator, have many scars and nearly lost a few other fingers, cars I’ve smashed up, a system meltdown I caused during IT days, there are many many more involving me and at times others , but they were just momentary things …. THE ONE that really sticks in my mind was probably THE ONE where I was 100% at fault.
In my teens I made THE classic error. Just after tea, my then boss decided to change around the team which had been working for the last three days …he should go mowing and that I should come off haulage onto the forager…. Same as in this pic, but we had mounted a 140 hp Bedford on it. He disappeared leaving me in charge of the team and a forager with an engine that would not start … it was a gunged up starter motor. I pulled it off in the field and sanded down the armature with rough grass, borrowed one of the fully charged tractor batteries, all sorts, eventually got it back on and the Bedford fired up. In my defence, this was pretty damn stressful. The rest of the team ( 6 of them) were standing around, the farmer and his bloke were waiting on the pit, it was getting dusk, the dew was descending….…
The relief when it started was immense, I quickly slung all the tools in the box, fired up the trusty 85horse 4wd Belarus we had as the tractor dragging around the forager and trailer combo, backed up picked up the trailer, Everything wound up ready to rock, two feet of grass later, found the spanner I’d left behind. Took out seven blades as I recall. I was not a happy bunny nor was anyone else.
last time I drove the forager for him….we had a major fall out over it.
Still sticks in my mind as one of the stupidest things ever. I normally used to count out tools out and into the toolbox for this very reason.
