as long as you fitted the 3 in the middle together and the 2 on the right together and the left is the live to your bulb or strip light and put the earths together you should be fine

have ypu tryed all your other lights in the house ive had a couple times where the loop live has snaped after screwing it in unless you cheak the other lights you wont know

I just swapped out the wires to my new light.

For all I know the rest of the house might be hooked up to that circuit. Small 2 bed bungalow, not exactly over loaded with lights.

That method works fine if you have one light. However, the majority of the time you have more than one light on a lighting circuit - so at that point you have to decide if you want to run your power cable to each switch and junction it in the back box and then a separate cable to each light. Or run the power to the rose and loop it out and then a separate cable to the switch. Both are equally valid and both have their advantages, it really depends on the application.

Traditionally most domestic lighting circuits use loop-in rose as it is often easier than trying to squeeze everything into the back of a light switch and can use less cable- and that is before you get into multi-way switching. I prefer loop-switch for commercial/workshops where you have lots of strips and for those fancy new fittings with no room in.

Summary, nothing wrong with it – and they even sleeved the switch wire on the return leg like a good sparky.

What's the point running the earth if it's not attached to anything, ie the light fitting?

each point must be earthed some light fittings and most switches double insulated so there not needed but still run in . most light fittings and all metal switches need earthing

Does your garage light have it's own MCB or fuse? If not, it is part of the lighting circuit in other parts of the house which will also be wired like this. It saves having to run supply cables to every switch and back out again which is what your simple example would need. The way it is wired means the supply line runs from light to light with only a switch wire running to each light switch.

Good point, if all wires ran back to the one power supply......

There is one 5 amp breaker for lights, and the board has a built in MCB. I think it was all rewired a couple of years ago.

But you guessed it pretty good. When i wired lights in my last shop I ran a single 3 core, with the switch in one line, so how come the need for 3 x 3 core ? Just seems like ridiculous overkill to me.

To be fair, that's pretty neat and tidy. I've seen some right bowls of spaghetti in light fittings!

its better than having joint boxes under the floor that cant be got at. any faults on the circuit can easily be traced by parting the wires on the lights. the other advantage is you have a feed at each light making it easier to take extra lights off without running cables miles away to get a supply
