SMALL (ish) TRACTOR

hi Sako, all doable i suppose but its drifting away from my idea of a small tractor to big to wide

anyone who understands chains and sprockets ? am i better off with a big chain say 1" pitch or smaller duplex so i have 2 chains side by side, where do i buy sprockets ? i tink i want somethink like a 5" daimeter on the transfer box then a 7" on the diff that would be a reduction wouldent it ?

Just shorten the long side of the axle to another short one, that'll save you a foot comfortably and keep standard parts.

If you don't care about suspension (big soft tyres instead) then weld the axle to the chassis and do away with propshafts that need to change length / axle / flex. Then you're basically down to engine and gearbox length.

well the grinder got some action i went and found an sj front alxe to cut down to use as a tractor front

quick grind and the diff was gone

a strip down and i had a whole load of bits

bit of a clean up and it looked more inviting and would you believe the axle ends slid up inside 3" dia tube easy to make a front axle of any width you choose

so the tractor front axle gathers momentum

i still havent decided on the engine choice yet l like the idea of an auto gearbox which steers me towards the landrover engine and box but i have to get the transferbox between the back wheels which looks a little tight

if i go back to the transit engine i could do with a smaller second gearbox, something like a bedford cf diesel zf box if anyone has one under the bench lol

i will do some more tinkering

l knew they existed but never seen one in the flesh, pleny of pics of them out there though, strange market, who would buy an sj thats only 2wd

mine looks similar just a little narrower

some get finished some dont they just get put into storage to come back to another day
when i was a wee boy i used to buy airfix models an spend hours building them painting them and apply the decals once finished it was an anticlimax as i just threw them on top of the wardrobe as all the fun of building them was over, for me the fun is in the planning the working out the acquiring of bits the cutting and the welding the painting, finishing it just signals the end of the fun, my last project was the mx5 buggy it was sort of finished well the chassis was finished and painted then someone offered me nearly enough money to but an arcroid for it , so the question was would i rather have a collection of tubes in the garage or an arcroid ? well its gone and an arcroid will be coming to live in my workshop, can always build another chassis

so ive been playing around in the garage i cant decide if i like 4 wheels the same size or if i should have 2 smaller ones on the front more like a traditional tractor
my first ideas for a chassis went out the window as the big wheels need so much space to turn but hey ho i will sort something out

cant have been many folk who bought them or we would see them out there, but all apart of lifes rich tapestry im glad there is odd stuff out there

so ive been fiddling in the workshop, ive decided the transit engine was the one to use as it was the easiest to get to and get home , probably not the soundest reason but it was the one i went with for now, i still hanker after an auto but will run with this manual for now,
when i lay it all out with the engine/box sat in the chassis at the height i want which is fairly high as i might want to add a cutting deck under the belly then the gearbox out put flange is about 10" higher than the diff input flange, bummer i thought at first but its actually good,
i was playing in my transit pickup to look at gearing, in first gear at 2000rpm ( which is where i imagine the engine will run when im mowing ) the road speed was indicating 8mph im guessing it wants to be more like 2 mph when its a tractor, so i need a 4 to 1 reduction ( i think )
which is why the 10" offset in gearbox and diff is good, first thoughts were i can bolt a 10 tooth cog on the gearbox and a 40 tooth cog on the diff input and hey presto ive got them coupled up with a reduction of 4 to 1 all nice and neat small and compact, sprockets and chain are around £150 ish
then i got to thinking i dont like the exposed chain that would be vulnerable to branches etc although ii think it would just chew them up and spit them out
so i started think about making a case for the sprockets and chain then it dawned on me i was just making a transfer box so i offered up a suzuki sj transferbox it all seems to be do able i can make all the connections with the flanges and ujs ive got so it saves me £150 in chains but it makes the drive train 10" longer but dose that matter ? i can also select hi range which gives me the gearing of a stock transit (almost ) although i cant see any reason that would be useful who needs a 70mph tractor although if i made it road legal it would be quicker getting to the shops

so its decision time chain drive = more compact or transferbox = longer drive train but high range available , where would you go ?

and i suppose the other advantage of the transfer box route is that there is the front output flange facing the front which i could run a small prop from to the front bumper to power something like a road sweeper or maybe a small winch made from an old diff

sj low range is a long way short of 4 to 1 tho isn't it ?

flick the axle over and mount it the other way around and have the transfer behind the axle, could disengage drive and just have a pto output

My new Husqvarna mower does 8mph flat out and you definitely don’t want the cutter deck engaged at that speed!
