ford 2.5di banana engine is a good choice, they're a hell of an engine

but... it's going to be pretty long by the time you have the engine, 2 gearboxes and a prop shaft all in a line

Are you going to change gears with both gearboxes or have one permanently in a low gear to just use as gear reduction?

I'd be very tempted to use an automatic for the gear changing one

like i said i prefer a frame i can get to paint and underseal

now the frame i like is the club cadet, c channel or angle iron

a 50s build c section got some nice air gadgets

if he uses a high/ low gear box he will have 8 gears to play with

5 speed of the transit gearbox then 4 speeds of the handler gearbox... that's 20 gears to play with

But most of them are useless if he never want's to go over 20 mph? I'm guessing 20mph will feel pretty fast on something like that!

The gearboxes don't have to be all in line. You can run them parallel to the engine using a chain drive from one to the other.

We used to use Ransome triples on the council doing schools. Brilliant tools and practically unbreakable and you can use any combination of cut with the mowers lifted to get through narrow gaps.

Best to remember that Ransomes had a very great deal of knowledge about designing and making mowers (besides many other things), and usually shone out above the competition.

the kubota uses a very simple high/low gear ( forward and reverse lever )

lathes use the same method

i agree its going to be pretty long but i dont think thats a problem i have no sharp corners to get round and some of the builds with long bonnets look pretty cool, yes i imagine the second gearbox will stay in first gear and the transit box used to select road speed , although the secondry gearbox will still have the leaver on it so i can select second if i need to get a move on, i not even sure that 1st will be low enough but 1 st is around 4 to 1 l might need 6 to 1 but tyre size is going to have a say in this
now auto would be great my preferred choice but i dont have an auto for the transit engine, few and far between although i have seen them in mini busses
i do have another engine choice with an auto box but it had some down sides but rethinking it it maybe ok, landrover 300tdi auto i have a complete one thats rotted away far to much to want to weld back up drive train is fine and i occasionally take it around the fields to keep it alive, down side was that the rear transferbox out put is offset and wont line up with the centre diff, also the low box is 3 to 1 i think not low enough for mowing, i will do some experimenting with it and see what road speed i get in lowbox at 2000 rpm, but with a bit of thinking outside the box maybe the offset rear output could be turned into an advantage , if i set the engine and box well back so the rear prop output flange and diff input flange are inline i could chain drive from one to the other with a big chain, different size sprockets will allow me to tinker with the gearing to get any reduction i want
theres also a couple of plus points with lr gearbox obviously it auto which i like but it also has a transmission brake which gives me a hand brake and i can use the pto to drive the hydraulics for the mower enabling me to disengage the hydraulics when i just want to go to tescos in it

i agree most of the gears would be useless unless your attempting a land speed record for mowers
might have 2 or 3 gears that were operable

the shafts can go the the axles which reduce the gearing more.

The problem with the landrover pto is its only running at engine speed when the gearbox is in 4th gear and the transfer box is in neutral. If say you were in first gear with the pto engaged the pto speed would be a fraction of engine speed and would stop the second the vehicle came to a halt. For a constant engine speed related PTO you would have to run off the engine end. We use the same pto system on the landy cherry picker, transfer box in neutral, engage fourth gear, select pto, release clutch.

nothing wrong with the concept but i dont have one at least not a diesel auto

Would you need to lock the diff for both shafts to drive ?

Yep, you usually just weld the diff up solid like in my Suzuki Rockefeller

maybe the later ones do im no jcb expert, i bought these axles from an auction at jcb at least 15 years ago along with the wheels and tyres, some have been sold on long ago, the metal stillage they were all stacked on had a plate on that said 1cx, i did go and look at one and it looked the same to me, they were originally set up for hyd drive but you can unbolt the motor and brake and it has a normal input flange, ive just dug through my old laptop for a few pictures, where did all them years go , they fly past lol

Quieter and possibly cheaper. you can get things like the outlander motor that would be plenty powerful (80KW) for around £500, a Prius inverter, obviously there is the controller, charger and battery but not too much too it really and a complete running gear could be less then £2000. What does a 300tdi and R380 with transfer go for these days?

If you want to be out all day on it, its not really a goer but if its a couple of hours mowing then worth a look?

No fuel to mess with, no oil to change (often). Quieter, won't stink. Simply plug in and be done. Upgradeable if you wanted more run time, power or 4wd.

typical run time for the mower is around 1 hour every 2 weeks sometimes a bit more but not much,
how much is a 300tdi engine and box ? well i would guess £750 but i have this £200 beauty sat in the yard rusty as hell but it runs and drives fine, i should really pull the engine and box and scrap the rest but i start it once a month and drive it round the fields just to stop it sizing up, so i dont need to buy anything for this project really

however i like the idea of electric drive but alas i know nothing about how it all works or what i would need, i have a tiny suzuki jimny based rockcrawler buggy that needs repowering i would think it would be a candidate for electric drive, 2 hour runtime or 30 miles would be enough but unless you think you can talk me through the install i doubt i have the ability to attempt it

Why not scrap the body off that? Chop unnecessary bits off the chassis (perhaps shorten it). Hell replace the LT230 with some big sprockets and chain drive to reduce the gearing and away you go. Get another front axle and put it on the back and you have 4 wheel steer.

If you split the back of the gearbox then you could have hydraulic pumps off that as well although you'd probably want those more engine driven.
