and mention the merry tiller there cheap enough to buy but they are great for homemade parts mine has the 5.5 engine on it

note the trailer on this machine



they are good for towing

i would buy a small tractor if i could find one but if it starts its 3k around here , i will fix the fiat tractor eventually and as you say whats left of the cab could be binned but i dont have the time or the facilities to split the tractor in half to do the clutch but that will change next year when the new barn/workshop is up

I even thought of restoring a tractor, even though I have no where to use it!

Think you need (or make) something with a front mounted flail for that job. Will make it so much easier to do dodging between the trees.


Not what you want to do of course but a zero turn mower would also be ideal and fast.

That would be prefect for my place in Portugal. 8 months of the year there is NO grass but when it does rain a tiny bit it grows like crazy.

if i was building a small tractor it all depends on the engine you want car engine diesel/petrol

keeping the parts simple and repairable/replaceable

the main points for me is tractor pto and the low speed gearbox i presume 4x4 would be worth it

car engine out of a pug

for the sub framing alone for me its either going to be c channel or i beam channel, box section is no good and you cant paint inside of it even if you was to galvanise the sub frame i beam or c channel is going to be cheaper

there is pto builds on youtube as well as a high low gearbox build

added to that i want to use what i have about the place as it keeps the cost down, im not unduly tight lol its more that ive been saving for an arcroid and ive just about got enough if i dont blow it on mower tractor bits

for the chassis i was thinking of using 100mmx50mmx3mm box as i have 3 or 4 lengths in the barn was going to cap the ends and use them as part the hydraulic tank, i have a transit engine and box the old banana bunch one easy to wire no electronics or immobilizer to play up, then straight out of the 5 speed gearbox into a 4 speed box that that i took out of a dodge cherry picker small ish and very strong then straight into the back axle which is from a jcb 1cx front axle is undecided , many seem to taked something like a transit or ldv dropped front axle beam axle chop some out the middle to get the width reduced then turn it upside down to get it to arch up to allow the chassis to run straight through from front to back on one level, i have a ldv 200 pilot front axle so i might do that or i might just take an sj axle chop the diff out and weld the tubes back together so its just a straight axle same as a 2wd sj the benefit i see there is the suzuki stud patten will match the rear jcb axle which is 5x5.5" or chevy which is what suzuki is copied from l like the idea of the wheels being the same pcd all round i have dozens of suzuki wheels , the cutting deck will have 3 or 4 hyd motors which i robbed off an old mower,
hyd pressure will come from a pump that is mounted in front of the crank pully and driven by a little propshaft exactly the same as a jcb 3c which is where i got the pump from, i will need to fit a valve to short out the pump when starting otherwise i will be fighting the pressure with the starter motor, this will work as a speed control once its running then its body work and i have loads of old aluminum signs for that, so in my mind a budget of £100 is reasonable lol
i will layout the engine boxes axles in the next few days to try and work out how long it needs to be , will perhaps fit a 3 point front and rear
steering is as yet undecided will look at series landrover perhaps or i think there is a steering column of a very old 2wd dumper in the barn somewhere but i cant remember if its mechanical or hyd, but i guess either will work

Well for now it will drag a mower behind it, mower will be on its own wheels so the tractor won't see the weight of it just the effort to drag, but eventually l might have a 3 point linkage front and back

We used to use Ransome triples on the council doing schools. Brilliant tools and practically unbreakable and you can use any combination of cut with the mowers lifted to get through narrow gaps.
