Not really my area of expertise, I'm not a network expert...but thats the explanation that made sense to me.
I always assumed it was a wifi box and you could connect all the devices you want (within reason) and the only limit was the broadband speed but seems not. I guess it makes sense...a standard router isn't designed to have a few dozen devices hooked up? My friend is an IT guru....in the end I just asked what I should buy and just hoped it would fix the issue.
The one I bought was called a dream machine....it was appropriately named.
