It helps with it being pressure lubricated too. The oil is clean as a whistle and up to the "full" mark on the dipstick.

Does the comp have an unloader on the cylinders, just wondering as it probably wasent running off a clutch originally like some of the yorks etc but off a govenor so it would kind of free wheel so to speak when it reached pressure.

No it hasn't, although I suppose one could have been fitted externally.

The reason I asked is because I have a big comp whitch had a 10hp/3ph originally but was converted to 4hp/1ph and the only way I can run it without overloading the mtr is to start it and let it get to 40psi, at which time the mtr is taking near its rated current, I have then installed a press switch to controll a solenoid valve which unloads one cylinder allowing it to carry on to 90psi on one cyl it has worked well for me like this.

I used to work indirectly for SAB WABCO, Bromborough around 1996-1998.

This particular pump says "Westinghouse Brake and Signal Co. Ltd." on it. I suspect there are/were many different Westinghouse companies in the same group.

My 3hp compressor has a single A section so I don't see any problems with 2hp.

I originally went for a 4 pole motor, slower speed, less noise but could only get a 2 pole cap. run, cap start. The pulley is half the diameter so the torque on the motor will be halved so I don't anticipate any problems.

Hopefully I'll get it fired up tomorrow.

I was going to reply but realised the maths were going to be tricky. So I won't.

Though pye isn't involved anywhere.

Force on the belt = motor torque / pulley radius. Half the pulley diameter and the force doubles.

Speed of the belt varies with the pulley radius. (Circ = pye * diameter) Half the pulley diameter and the speed halves.

What complicates things is the motor characteristics and the load characteristics. No way will I try and second guess the details those dudes will throw up. I'd rather leave that sort of thing for rtbcomp to worry about.

Fitted the 4 pole motor today, still struggles though. I've tried 2 different motor pullies to run the pump at 700 and 580 rpm. The 2 pole ran it at 875 rpm.

One thing I did notice is that the rpm increased as it warmed up. The sump felt hardly warm at all so I think the next job is an oil change to a thinner grade.

Would running it in the wrong direction be a problem? There's no markings on it so I set it to anti-clockwise as this is how it was from the start.

There is an oil pump which I primed, but when I turned it CW by hand it ejected the oil I put in the priming port, turning CCW the oil was sucked into the priming hole.

Maybe some don't circulate oil properly other wise. Try the other way wont hurt for 5 min

My thoughts exactly. It's reasonable to assume you prime an oil pump by pouring oil in the suction side.

Looking at your pic again the pivot rod would be bolted to the side of the engine and belt tension underneath, is that the oil filler on the middle of crankcase, which would suggest that if it was fitted to a diesel it would be on the right side viewed from pulley /crank front, thus clockwise rotation, it would not be possible to mount on the left or your filler would be underneath? am I making sense?

Regarding the priming, would you crank it round and undo the priming port so as not to be pumping against a back press, if you kept turning the crank it should pick up oil from sump if going the right way that is??.

Assuming it was moiunted on an engine ,whichever side it was mounted on it will still rotate in the same direction as the engine, unless it was mounted such that the pulley faced the rear of the engine, with the body of the compressor proud of the front of the engine.

Not all engines rotate clockwise viewed from the front.
