Side stand set back !

Typical as i was reading a post recently regarding Regulator failures and mine died today on a small task for a customer.
I assume the diaphragm has a pin hole in it as i got a loud rush of gas when welding, Switched off the bottle and had a look to find bottle pressure getting through the regulator to the welder no matter where i set the gauge.
Ordered a new regulator but it's left the Bike without a stand until it arrives darn it
Here's the side stand pre-modification, Needs a good few mm added as the Bike has been jacked up at the rear..

Well i thought I'd have a go with the new Tig welder and see if i could manage a bead or 2 on the side stand but after the picture posted it got very messy with impurities surfacing and ending the task.
As said I'll get the stick on it
Considering it's the first time ever using a Tig set i was very confused with buttons and dials

Hang on, did you cut off the foot and extend the stand by inserting a section of mild steel??

I assumed you would be fitting a foot onto the end. The stand is going to be weakest just where you don't want it. If you think about it, you can happily prop up a bike on its sidestand just by sticking a lump of cheese under the foot. On the other hand, you wouldn't want a sidestand with a cheese section half way up...

looking closely, the "hook" on the stand is facing the weld...which means, I think, that the extension is at the top of the stand....leaving the foot in tact.
I was thinking the steel was going to be added to the bottom of the foot. but maybe that was not tall enough.

I might cut a groove along the length of the stand on the back side and fill it with weld that you leave proud. (backbone?) This in conjunction with a stick welded joint would definitely be strong enough.

The tig welds look good for a first attempt...I have never tried it, tbh.

Im not sure if this is proper procedure....but I groove all welds on thicker steel because my skills are not on a professional level. This helps a hobbyist achieve acceptable (I hope) weld penetration.

I am looking closely too and to me it looks like it's been cut in half (5/8th if you insist) and an extension piece inserted into the leg assuming the foot gets tacked on at the end. There are several problems with that solution:

The sidestand has been cut and welded right at the critical point in the middle of the curved support. The curve is not there for decoration it gives the maximum reach and minimum "stick out" when folded back to the frame. It does however take the maximum amount of stress at that exact point.

Having been cut in half, there will now be two welded sections in the support.

The insert piece looks like 15mm whereas the cast steel stand was 20mm at that point. That's 25% off. You don't even get that on a Halfords tool chest. The weld would need to be full penetration to even achieve that level of discount.

Allowing for the curve and the angle of the sidestand pivot, the foot is designed to be parallel to the ground at full extension. It will be tricky to calculate the required angle for the foot now that the stand has been lengthened and the bike will be more upright. That needs to be bang on the money since any error in the angle of the foot could lead to additional stress and may even allow the bike to tip...

I'm sure it will all be fine.

Stand all done, Fitted, Tested and Bike remains upright.
Not my first one or last, it was initially to mention the fact my Reg died rather than an autopsy on the work involved but all's good now.

It's not as if I have even touched any of my project bikes for years now. Maybe I am slowly getting my mojo back...

Should of posted pics of the broken reg then matey instead of feeding us vultures pics of your stand repair....Not the way i would of repaired it but that,s just me. I hope you sorted your broken reg out

Boring Regulator pics would never have prompted such outcry as a dodgy stand
