Showing off cheap flooring - very little metal involved!

I swear by this stuff for floorboards, its water based but hard as nails. Quick drying, low odour and you put it on with a roller so very quick. You need to use their primer first on bare wood and carefully denib with very fine paper but after that you just chuck 3 coats on and forget it for a long time. Its often used for retail premises so has to take some hammer. Mine has been down 12 years and I'm just thinking about putting on a refresher coat.

I've used Dulux Diamond Glaze, on heavy wear areas, 12 yrs ago, to good effect.

I was relieved to see we still had 5ltrs left to do the l/room floor Dec last yr, as like all paint it's daft money now

its mainly aimed at trade users Dave, although I have seen it in on sale retail in one place that sells hardwood flooring. I only discovered it 'cos a mate was a sales rep for them and stopped me buying varnish. They also sell a wood filler that is the terriers doo dah's, mix and fill its called. Mix it with sawdust from the job in hand and it blends in very well, most of the spirit based ones I've tried are rubbish, including some very expensive trade based products. Pro wood floor fitters use it as a slurry they squeegee over the floor before final sanding to fill in imperfections, you may need to apply it twice to big knot holes.

Im building my shed from scaffold boards (as most already know)..........early days yet

Ive sorted and painted preservative on the base boards (30) and then Ive got to do the floor. Ive been looking at various products. That BONA MEGA is very expensive Ive got 40 m2 of floor to do and its about 70 quid for 5 litres............and then theres the walls / roof etc. Any other recommendations?

Ive bought a log burner and a load of bricks to build a fireplace into the shed. It will be part of the back wall. Any ideas / pics of a nice looking fireplace

Im still preparing stuff so not much visible progress yet. I have redesigned it so its one 3.9m board wide and 2 boards long (less cutting). Im standing it on brick pillars and a concrete base for the fireplace.

The dulux diamond glaze that Dave mentioned sounds similar to Bona Mega, water based Urethane and thats about 100 quid for 5L. Bona also do a product called Traffic that is supposed to be harder wearing thant Mega and that is a similar price so probably the going rate for these products. Not cheap but good, however a bit OTT for a shed. I don't think you will need 5l though, I think I only used 10L for the whole of the upstairs rooms, landing and stairs.

Al. I'd make a troff out of some boards linned with plastic sheet, and soak the boards. Floor joists, flooring and lower timbers left to soak for longer, upper wood less, as they will be out of the damp. Stood upright in a tray to recover run off.

You can use damp proofing solution or simular, far cheaper

Thats an idea........Ive bought some solution but Ive painted it on.........seems to be working but soaking would be better

Ive got one shed down the garden that is just stood on 4x4 inch wooden legs and its fine. Its been there 16 years and Ive been threatening to build a wall around it supporting it for donkeys and never got round to it. I actaully intend to do it before I do the new one......

Various extensions blocked up the air bricks in all but one wall, so no cross ventilation
Somthing had happened in the past, resulting in someone resting one of the joists on the soil floor on a brick
70s replaster in gypsum


Job list -

Hack off gypsum
Cut out floor
Remove rotten joists (only the ends and the middle on most of them were rotten - and theyre oak, so will be a kitchen island when the time comes)
Dig out floor at one end
Install ducting for cross ventialation through extension
rebuild sections of sleeper wall, and level up the remaining
DPM under joists
Joists
nettting and insulation hung between joists
polyethene
boards (sanding, rot/woodworm treatement / waxed)
walls replastered (lime)
limewash


Basically its largely a battle against moisture / rot, and 1970s workmanship (one of the airbricks was blocked by drylining in the adjacent room?!?!)


Im not a builder at all, just DIY, and i know how to use google.... It may all fall apart in 5yrs, but i dont think it will : )



Here's one we did earlier -

Old beam was rotten. Replaced with a bit of reclaimed Elm.
More snooker table for the hearth.
Lime plaster.
Rayburn MF bought as £20 of scrap (providing we pulled it out of the woodland) / repaired from parts from another.
(the current model, which is virtually identical, is £3.8k to buy new!)

Its slow work when you have to scratch about for parts, but we're finding out you can still get nice stuff / finishes (in the context of an old house) without spending loads.

Julian seen your post from years ago and we have just bought 50 x 13 foot scaff boards and are about to tackle our front two rooms. We love the look of yours and wondered if you might recall what stain/varnish you used? Long shot I know but they look amazing!!

Julian seen your post from years ago and we have just bought 50 x 13 foot scaff boards and are about to tackle our front two rooms. We love the look of yours and wondered if you might recall what stain/varnish you used? Long shot I know but they look amazing!!

In the photo, it's briwax, but I wouldn't do that again. Briwax is good for low abrasion items.

For floors you probably want one of the osmo pollyx or somthing like that.


Curiously we had some people over on Friday night, and they said how nice the floor was. It's got to have been down the best part of a decade now and I'm not sure I've ever refinished it... So maybe the wax wasn't so bad, but I think it's more just that the whole thing was supposed to look "old" so the years of damage have not really degraded the look that badly!

I would be hesitant to mention it, in conjunction to my prior advice on product choice, as it's a briwax colour.

Ie if you are shopping by colour "name" then the only product using that "name" will be one that ive specifically recommended that you do not use.

I have no control over what you get up to at all, but I'd rather not promote my own mistakes to someone else!
