Can't help mate but well bid

cost me £490 by the time i had paid to store it there for a few days and get it home and buy a box of tools for it but still happy for the money

was only watching it to see how much it went for but when it got down to the last few minutes without a bid i couldnt resist

never do that as i garauntee that the day after something will turn up not far awy for nothing

the lathe weight around 1.5 tons so it would be £300 to scrap not that i will

any idea what the small bracket is that is nearly in the way of the nameplate

is it to stop the steady at a fixed place as it apperas it is supposed to have a lenght of bar in it according to lathes.co.uk

It will be for stopping the saddle as it slides (by feed) along the bed towards the headstock (and chuck/plate). You need to be able to stop in exactly the same position for repetitive cuts along the length.

It seems there's the other part of the stop (what the adjustable bar comes to bear upon .... or rather 'it' upon the bar) on the bottom of the apron, and the clue also is that it seems positioned directly under the saddle feed selector. When the saddle comes far enough for this device to stop against your adjusted bar, it will trip the feed selector and thus take the saddle out of geared feed. You might find fine micrometer type adjustment on the apron device.

You want to make sure this trip selector works smoothly and is adjusted sensitively. Apart from accurate cuts it will stop the feed from continuing and the saddle/tool, etc smashing into the chuck.

didnt realize it would be connected into the power feed as well

Not my property, but I was up a dead-end road looking for somewhere to turn round when I happened upon two Dean Smith and Grace lathes (about 10 foot beds) that had been left outside to rot
Didn't have a camera with me but next time I''m passing I'll get some snaps. The lathes are clearly beyond saving, the carriages won't slide, everything's rusted solid.
Mind you, the fact that they're outside an engineering firm suggests that either they're knadgered or were no longer required... in which case it seems odd that they wouldn't have tried to find a buyer. What's even more surprising is that Gyppo George and his mates haven't had them away with a Hiab!

A rusted bed doesn't mean it's nadgered, especially on something as heavy as a DSG; the bed on my Viceroy was rusted when I got it, a few hours elbow grease, WD40 and some green potscourer later it was derusted revealing a reasonable proportion of the fishscale handscraping that it left the factory with. Even if the bed becomes pitted it will probably be good enough for hobby use, or if not a regrind will give you a lathe capable of shrugging off nuclear attacks while being durable enough to leave to your great-great-great grandchildren.

Here's my machine; it's looking a bit sad at the moment as the old man has covered it in sawdust and stacked random things in front of it. The panel I made myself when I converted to a VFD. It all works as advertised except for the jog, I got the logic a bit wrong and if you jog without having the stop locked in when you let the jog go it goes to normal running(whatever the speed is set at). I haven't accumulated enough round tuits to dismantle and correct the error.

Moe than likely. One of them had been left with the headstock cover off so perhaps there was a gear issue that wrote it off... they're not a million miles from your place, round the back of the tea factory!
Incidentally, I hope you don't fancy an Indian any time soon...

Bought it last year off an older relative who bought it new!
He made a hefty profit on the deal!

I have no interest other than as a customer with the auctioneers; bear in mind the hammer price gets 32% added for buyer's premium and VAT.

Always seems to sell it at a hefty price too, if I recall correctly? There are far cheaper places/suppliers to get belting from.

Blasphemy. T'is true though in a lot of cases, which is unfortunately why a lot of good kit has gone never to be seen again in the past.

I have a lathe here in similar condition. An old Drummond 5". Rusted and pitted on the bedways and such, to a degree, but should clean up well enough to be a good, usable machine once I get round to doing it. Even a degree of pitting shouldn't be a notable problem on a lot of machines, (unless it really is excessive), as how much of the surface area contact would it actually lose due to what might only be minor pitting? Not enough to cause problems, I'd guess, (or should that be hoping? ). To say it's nigh on a hundred years old and has survived life in a farm barn for some of those years, (including the acidic wash they sprayed over everything machinery based during the foot and mouth outbreak), it ain't in too bad a nick as is, by my reckoning.

they would be a bit crispy if i did .they recon the fire was arson the lathes your on about are at healds engineers, theyve been ouside for years .last year some scrappy types were caught and they ran the owner over with there stolen getaway car car there was old bill and helicopter swarming allover the place .they wanted to see my surveylance cameras as some of the gang ran off past my house

Ta for the heads up but none of those harrisons have the Norton gearbox. Change wheels impossible to get and very limited.

What a great thread - some lovely machinery there

here's a photo of mine - had it about a year and only just got a round to cleaning it and opiling everything.

It's an Atlas TV 36 which I think means it's a 10" F series (?) with a 36" bed. All seems to work well enough for my capabilities although the bed is pitted and slightly worn in the middle.

Been practising with the few tools I've got - any suggestions as to where to obtain a good basic set of tools
