Very nice, I love the quick change tool holders. That is something I would like to get for my Elliott Omnispeed.

I will have to do some research to get the best price performance ratio for the quick change tool post and tool holders.

That's an unusual way to store your tool post, milling attachment, chuck key, and what appears to be a tool post grinder ? Haven't seen one before with a motor attached on top like that.

This is a lorch BVIPK screwcutting lathe built in 1973, quite a rare thing according to Tony at lathes.co. He'd not seen one until I sent him some pictures. Its meant for instrument making, it was being used for making microscopes. It doesn't have a screw and change gears but a cylinder with a master thread, and when you engage it the whole head spindle advances past the awaiting cutter which is stationery.

That's an unusual way to store your tool post, milling attachment, chuck key, and what appears to be a tool post grinder ? Haven't seen one before with a motor attached on top like that.

This is how the seller listed it, not my pic. I've not used the attachment yet, it has collets for taking cutters

I can currently acquire such a rare sweetheart - in this case a 280-EM, i.e. with fully metric thread gearbox - at a reasonable price, but note that the part seems to be so rare that there is almost no information available.

So far, I assume that their rarity is not the result of defects, but assume that Myford determined at the time that the machine is too expensive to produce to compete successfully against the intended competitors Colchester Bantam and Harrison M250
- so in this case rare because too good ... Can this be?

It looks a good machine. It has a carriage handwheel dial, which a lot of machines do not have. Brochure says it has dual imperial/metric dials as standard. Has a thread dial that works with all metric threads and only has two gears.

Having browsed the manual, these are really picky observations, so please do not take them too seriously:

I am comparing to a Bantam, one of the machines that you mention.

Power feeds are driven off the leadscrew rather than a second shaft. This means a keyway is needed in the leadscrew, which wears the halfnuts.

The optional extra auto-longitudinal feed trip that is fitted to your machine only works feeding towards the headstock and does not work at all for auto-cross feed.

The standard toolpost (which you do not have) that is shown on the brochure is the same as on a 1947 ML7.

Like a Bantam, it only has a 4MT spindle (Chipmaster, also on D1-3, has 4.5 Morse). That means 5C collets won't fit. 4C will fit, but are less easy to find.

Like most other metric machines, the thread dial table implies it is required for every metric pitch. That is not so. There are a number of pitches where you do not need the indicator at all, so the table would be better if it said 'any' or 'not required' in those cases.

A good accessory to track down would be a Burnerd EC Multisize chuck.

You know where I'm coming from: Working on a ML7 and have a S7 on standby ... this one should be a leap forward - and comes for the cost of a S7 on our market here ...

Fortunately, someone before me has taken care of a Multifix QCTP - but according to the machine a few sizes larger than my current size AA ... I do not know how many tool holders come along, but that will gnaw afterwards certainly on the savings ...

Can anyone advise me a test program, as the current plan is

- that I will look at the machine on Tuesday on the way to Mecklenburg and try it out
- on Thursday or Saturday I could then take it on the way back if I like it ...?!?

Since we drive with the large combination, (outward journey full of agricultural equipment) loading and transport should not make any difficulties.

Not like this one I assume:

OK. The original toolpost (clamp) is upside down bottom left of the cabinet picture.

The brochure must be incorrect as the chucks there are not D1-3 but are an A-style taper. The Standard is either DIN55026 or DIN55027. Santool.de show them in their catalogue. The taper and stud dimensions are the same but D1-3 uses cams in the spindle to tighten the pins. Your one uses nuts and studs (it is cheaper to make, and takes longer to change a chuck).

smouser's one is one or two sizes bigger than yours (four studs rather than three) but it is the same piece of paper that defines the dimensions.

If it is the bayonet type then personally I would say it is a lot quicker to change than camlock. Slacken, in my case 4 bolts (C8 spindle) , 1/4 turn, turn the bayonet ring a few degrees and pop chuck off the taper.

I'm intrigued by that. What does the "bayonet type" look like? I looked for C8 lathe spindle on t'interweb but just got lots of Chinese lathe stuff. Getting my D1-3 camlock chuck off is a job that takes seconds: there are three cams, 1/3 turn anticlockwise for each one pop the chuck off (sometimes with a gentle tap with a soft hammer to get it off the taper). I'm struggling to imagine a chuck mount that could be quicker than that. My old nuts & studs one was a pain in the backside.

It is a ring with keyhole slots in it that sits behind the flange on the lathe spindle. Look up buttonfix Type 1. Three or more of those arranged in a circle.

The nuts and washers on the studs go through the big part of the keyhole, then you give the locking ring a slight twist and tighten the nuts.

There are not many pictures of the locking ring around because it is part of the lathe.

It is the light grey part in the computer model here, free to rotate on the spindle but not able to move closer to the tailstock because it pulls the chuck against the dark grey flange:

The bayonet ring is shown in the drawing below, it is usually loosely held to the spindle flange with the two 'top hats' shown in the below drawing where the E section annotation is on the drawing and can only rotate a few degrees. There is also a locating pin on the back of the chuck that fits into the recess on the other side of the flange shown to the right of the top stud.

With regards this bit, yes on a 3 stud camlock it will likely be quicker than the bayonet but when you are talking a 6 stud camlock then the bayonet will likely be faster. I know my C8 is quicker than the D1-6 on the Triumph.

I do not know if it is obvious, but the fitting on the Myford above is not the bayonet type.

You can see from the studs projecting from the chucks that the threaded part is the same diameter as the plain part of the stud, so the nuts have to come off for the chuck to mount on the spindle.
