I'd keep that one, personally. If you look closely at the design, you'll note that's not your common style wrought benchtop design of vice.

That's not a P, it's just a 112. Record shared the castings and someone had to chisel off the cast 'P'. Often they didn't do a fabulously flush job, and it remains. P stands for plain, so without quick release.

So, when restoring a vice, see the little cuts where some one has gone to far with a hack saw, is it good practice to weld and polish back or does that ruin the hardening completly? Arther

I never bother filling or grinding them, my main concern is do the jaws have enough meat on them, and do they have enough grip. You can always re-file the cross-hatch pattern (boring but possible). Sometimes you can also flip the jaws, annoyingly on my 34P the holes were off centre so I couldn't do that and they're mashed!

ok, well still leaves me with the question whats the proper way of filling cuts and nicks, car filler doesnt cut it as far as I am concerned as a blow with a hammer would ruin that PDQ, not that I intend to do that but you see where I am coming from.Arther

Do you mean the marks on the jaw insert or on the body behind each jaw?

Unless they are real damage I think they add to the character and life history of the vice so I'd leave them, like the flash and casting marks that come with them.

if you really need to remove the scars then I'd remove the jaws and regrind or mill them square again, then file or mill the vice to remove the scratches.

In reality, unless you want to enter the vice in some sort of show and shine custom vice show then just leave it as it is, its a vice FFS

Braze, weld etc., if you feel you must fill scars. I'm with the others in preferring to leave usage marks as-is, however, unless they're detrimental to use.

Believe me all my tools are used, sometimes abused,like 5 foot scaff tube on 3/4 t bar on 1/2" adaptor on 1/2" drive socket,12 stone jumping on it to undo wheel nuts, who the fred king hell did the wheel nuts on the van used a 3/4 drive windy set for artic wheels I reckon, Anyways it was a question as on best method to do a proper job , not a show piece ,but if I do re furb one would like to do it well.
Its on the body of the vice where people hacksaw into them, lets face it jaws are throw away/replaceable.
Maybe we should start a ,my most trusted and abused lifetime tools...Arther

Not sure why, because I don't "need" another, but I bought a 4 1/2" machine vice today; guess it's because this thread has me feeling all nice warm and fuzzy. Will post a photo when it arrives.

The urge to get just one more sneaks up on you, and before you know it....

The more I think about it, it does fit in between the 3 1/2" and the 6", so kind of like finding a missing socket to complete a set; yeah, that's justification enough.

The vice arrived well packed and unscathed. Its a "Jones & Shipman" S4605-229 Model, and is in superb condition without drilling or milling damage. This is going to be just perfect for my Tom Senior mill and I'm sure will get the most use. Happy day.

Had some time today, so took the vice apart, degreased it and painted it; green of course.
Will try to post a photo tomorrow if I can get my camera sorted out. It might be time to get a new one.
