Wait until it's done.... They look lovely once they're fettled. Mine had a God awful paint job on it when it came, but looks a treat once it was fettled.

If it's a Soderfor, they usually had a raised portion on the front which they punched the info into. The Bofors appear to just have had the cast numbering, as on yours, without that front, raised data plate. This is the Soderfors in bits. The data plate is that unpainted portion on the front.
As you can see, that paint job left a little something to be desired.
Make sure to post some more photo's of yours once you've fettled it. They're quite an old vice too. This one is dated 1921, so they're early 20th century. Yours should be of similar age. They don't appear to be common either. Yours is only around the fifth or sixth which I can recall seeing photo's of.

That has to be one of the ugliest vices I've ever seen.

Hi Matt. I've got them there not too bad really just wanted to try and get her looking like new, was me dads and spent a lot of time in my youth using it would've been nice to get it looking brand new. Any ideas on the best way to restore it was maybe thinking about getting it dipped then powder coated? Or maybe just get a flap disc on it?

If you're planning on doing the cleaning via mechanical means, a brass wire brush would do as well as owt else and would not inflict any damage on the metal. Something like a flap disc will remove good metal. Post a photo of it as is.
With regards finish, I'm personally not a fan of powdercoat. It has it use and place, but for something like a vice, it's not an option I'd personally consider.

I seem to be obsessed with vices currently. Here's todays acquisition. A Record 634 next to my trusty "little" record No.4.
Weighs as much as the anvil this half is sitting on!
Don't quite know where I am going to put it. The lead screw is virtually a metre long!
...and a surprisingly fine pitch too.
Now I need a lie down. My back is killing me.

It should have pipe jaws under the main jaw. I'll have to make some up. The bolts appear to either clamp the pipe jaws on place or screw into a threaded hole.

Lol, I'll find you a picture of my proper vice ..... makes your 634 look like a paperweight at the mere 170lbs that it is

Is that not the original colour then? Seem to recall seeing a NOS Woden a while ago which was something like that colour. Regard the cleanup, is that how it was when your dad had it? I'd be tempted to merely clean rather than completely redo if so. If you're going the full hog though, brass or soft bristle brushes & electrolysis are both subtle methods for cleaning up equipment, and electrolysis tends to remove most paint, depending on paint tenacity.
Can't make out much in that photo, but if the inserts are decent nick, I'd honestly leave them be. Can't say I've seen any inserts as yet which weren't still in usable condition, no matter how worn. A few chips or the serrations being worn, (that's actually a plus in my book), won't make them any less functional, and you can always make and use some covers if the appearance bothers you.

You were just unlucky, the 634 is one of the biggest UK vices around apart from a few Records which we've only seen in catalogues.Mark carter
