Muppet. If you can't tell there are gradually less threads showing, & that it's loose, before the bolt drops out, you shouldn't be using tools.

(no not nuts) --- just realised the solid old Record no 2 in the greenhouse which probably takes the most hammer (shakes the panes) is attached to the (solid wooden) bench with coach screws, (shock horror), heads up (well, you try them the other way), just checked -- they're still tight after more than 15 years

one redeeming factor - they're square-headed - I like old stuff and square heads give that feel - the old Parky Handy types made with a two casting static jaw switched from square to hex headed at some point (guess around 1900?) any experts in nut and bolt archaeology?

done -- we're bringing the conversation back to nut and bolt etiquette, and preventing a swerve back to swivelling

Hi folks, iv recently acquired a vice that has a solid base with a threaded hole in between the two bench mounting holes that i assume is just another fixing point as it has some threaded bar in it. Anyway the slide doesn't wind in or out, but if you undo the handle it will then pull open an same shut wise and once against something like a block of wood it does nip up and hold it. My question is, is this some sort of qr or is it more likely broken somewhere ?

Its jaws are aprox 6'' wide and its got a small square anvil type plate.
This is my other one that ive had for nearly 30 years and although its been stored for the last few im happy to see it back on a bench ready for use

And finally one that i inherited from my dad that he liberated from the docks iirc,anyway its in need if fixing and a resto if i ever get around to it. The vice does up to a certain point then slips' and wont go any tighter which id imagined to be thread related ? any thoughts on this or the yank one much appreciated.

Lovely. If you can collect it, it's yours. Prefer not to faff with post or couriers for something like this. Quite heavy, & it'd be gutting if it disappeared in transit, with them being like hens teeth.

and on investigating i found that the centre 'bolt' was in fact a length of stud forced into the thread in the centre of the vice base but not far enough in to do anything other than be an added securing bolt anyway i taped it and fitted a propper bolt and it now works as it should onlly with a fair amount of slop,partly cause its missing a large washer i think between handle and body

Please bare in mind that i know nothing about vices and havnt actually finished building our garage/workshop yet,hence clean bench and lack of kit, any ideas on the rough age of this one would be much appreciated

I'm saying nowt, but now I know they're there....

The finish is a mix of beeswax, linseed oil & graphite powder, with pure/gum turpentine as the solvent. Good to see/know it has a good home where it'll be used. It was a crime for it to be sat here unused, when you have need of it.

I believe so, but it does look better that way round, I think. Sits under the front nicely.
