That doesn't look like it's ever been oiled. The oil nipple lines up with the hole in the front of the head stock above the lock button when it is engaged. There shouldn't be a great deal of play. If it's that bad it suggests it has never been oiled. It only rotates against the spindle in back gear. For normal use it is locked in 1:1 drive. Try oiling it and see how it feels. Ultimately it may need a strip down.
There's nothing special about stripping chucks. Remove the jaws first then take out all the bolts and go from there. Don't over lubricate it on reassembly or you'll end up spraying the workshop and creating a dust and swarf trap.
