broken into, the replacement is one of the new Euro power limited ones but I did notice when buying it that there are several versions the one with the default to low power was sold in the likes of Comet / Argus whilst my one that stays on full power when you turn it off / on again came from CPC / Farnell so like power tools of all sorts check the fine details before buying.

I just use a Lidl Parkside one, never used it as a wet vac but it hoovers up swarf etc like a good 'un. The bonus is, it's as cheap as chips so could almost be considered 'disposable'

I've used a Henry for years as my regular dust extractor for the table saw, router (both fixed, and mounted) and mitre saw.
vacs up swarf off the drill press
works great.

not so good on the planer, and not used it for the lathe, but for 120 new, and half that (or less) second hand it's a bit of a no-brainer.

got henry number 7 & 8 this afternoon, wife was amazed that i had it running and sucking like new in under a minute, some one had put a cheap paper bag inside it ,when you turned it on it sucked it flat ,causing no suction , removed the bag & bobs yer uncle ,quite sure it looks only a year old.

I bought one of these 3 months ago, so far it sucked up loads of brick, block and concrete dust and been hooked up to my compound mite saw and sander. I am impressed with how good it is for the low price.

I bought a cheap cyclone, I think it was 12 quid. The barrel with the sealable lid cost about 12 quid too, then use any vac with decent suction as most of the dust ends up in the barrel and you can use almost any hose you want. I'm using this on a track saw at the moment and there is next to nowt in the vac. I only built it yesterday, took longer to find the jubilee clip than it did to assemble it. Once tested it is going downstairs into the barn where the larger Wadkin bandsaw is.

I like the look of that, I want to build a tool and cutter grinder for the workshop but I'm not keen on the thought of the abrasive dust in close proximity to the slideways of the machines, that with my shop vac or the air mover attached to it with a bit of cunning guarding and a suds pump could be the answer. Let us know how well it works please.

If you can get a Numatic (industrial version of the Henry) it'll suck up anything including oily swarf. Doesn't need a bag just use the fabric filter and let the bin collect it all.

We use the 15 gallon twin-motor ones at work and they get heavily abused (the grunts at work deliberately block the float ball so they can get more in the drum, only stopping when the water comes out the motor exhaust). They take it all and keep on sucking though I don't recommend doing that with a 240v motor.

I have a smaller numatic in my workshop, I use it to hoover dust, swarf and anything else off the floor and the mill/lathe beds and it never misses a beat.

I always buy used and cheap..dont last long as the iron dust from my mechanical hacksaw always seems to get past the filters into the motor windings

I have not had to try to hose washing trick yet, having not thrown it on top of sewage.
I imported from Germany when the exchange rate was a lot more favourable, unfortunate they come with Schuko style outlets but that can be fixed with search for 'Berker' socket outlets and a little rewiring.

I made up one of these to use with my Festool dust extractor using a similar small blue barrel. First time I used it with my orbital sander it worked as designed, 99% of the dust ended up in the barrel. Unfortunately it also sucked the barrel nearly flat so I have to build mk 2, this time using a small steel drum.

On the Mira sander pipe, there are a couple of slots to let air in so the vac isn't trying to suck a golf ball up a hose pipe or the barrel would implode still sucks up all the dust.

If you can afford it the Numatic NVD750 is excellent, twin 750w motors it will suck up anything, can be used as an extractor for woodwork machines as well. They are over £500 new. I ordered a cheap extractor 4 years ago & got sent one of these by mistake, Proper result that was!

I have the same Numatic NVD750, it is branded Axminster as they were on offer but the same machine. I use it for the upstairs workshop ducted vacuum for the woodworking machines. Works great except it needs more bin capacity for the planer/thicknesser. So I was considering putting a cyclone on it, but 4" cyclones are silly money. There was a UK company making 4" cyclone kits, basically clear plastic sheet cut to size that you assemble, but they seemed to have died. I do have a spreadsheet somewhere that works out dimensions based on pipe size and vacuum capacity for a built it yourself job that I may do out of sheet steel or I could make a thien baffle. Thien baffles are not quite as efficient as a cyclone but easier to make. Loads of thien baffle plans on t'internet.

Was going to suggest a thien baffle as an alternative to a big cyclone, but even a dustbin with a 4in, tangential, "in" pipe, and a vertical 4in "out" pipe will get rid of most of the planings out of the airstream? Make it a dedicated unit, outputting to the usual extractor system.

Following on from the wet vacuum thread the other day which I am in the market for, are the numatic hoovers okay as a shop vacuum? Picking up swarf, metal dust, etc etc?

We have got a not cheap magnusson from B&Q (i think) at the minute and the bloody thing gets blocked in the end of the hose all the time, lid doesn't stay on.

This is what im looking at for the odd bit of wet vacuuming but will be awesome if it works okay in the workshop as £230 is a lot for an odd job machine.

I've got a second hand numatic that I bought four years ago, when it was probably already quite a few years old.
Works great, and I use it for steel and alu swarf (often oil-soaked), wood chippings and sawdust and generally everything in the garage. Sometimes a long stringy bit of alu might get choked at the inlet but it's not difficult to pull or push out.

I could get a stronger barrel, but the hose also concertinaed like a python with gut rot, so why put the vacuum under additional stress unnecessarily?

Those festool extractors have a deceptively strong suction, don't they!
