hi cj, ive just had a look at my photo on page 2 of this thread and it is not the selector switch that caught light it was that thing with the no 106 marked on it. its marked on the photo with a red arrow! is that a transformer?

Nope, it's a diode bridge rectifier. Obviously one of the Diodes has packed up. or more...
is that why its sparking and arcing out? is it repairable?

Not sure what that is, but I think the rectifier/doide thing are the green & silver plates that you can just see in the top-right corner of the picture.

Looks like more than one component has 106 marked on it, in that photo. Like that round silver capacitor-looking thing just to the right of the offending component.
Might well be a relay, as snooper says, can't see to much of it, to be honest though. Is there a clear side to it, where you can see a coil/contacts? Maybe a photo showing it from a different angle would be good.
By the time I've typed all this, you'll probably have already got your answer!

i have had a few problems with my mig (same automig) I dont know if my problem relates to yours. Twice i have blown the little sand block resistors on the board i think due to heavy usage. I think it due to the build up of heat through prolonged use and i plan to fit pc case fans to keep everything cool.
If you do get the mig repaired for a few £ i would make a small hole in the side casing and screw on a small PC type fan....These machines have no proper vents or fans.

If you're talking about the component highlighted in post #16 by Snooper, that is the contactor; it's just a special kind of relay, replacing that will be cheap.
thats what i meant the thing arrowed. i will take some better photos today if i can manage it ive just had another op on my knee so im on crutches at the moment! would that part be available easily or is it a call to sweden again. someone mentioned a diode might have gone down if i changed this contactor would a faulty diode knock it out again?

At last power on the low range
at last she is working properly on the low range (1-3) our good friend Rosepuds has been talking me through all the test procedures and after a good clean up and a new contactor she is a-ok now. i have found that even if it feels like a good connection, the best bet is strip it down clean up with sandpaper and soak it in switch cleaner it worked on my old girl,( now in her 33rd year, with the same diodes and pots,) lets hope she lasts another 30 years
