Shed tidy and storage update.

Yes, I had to do that for every single hole. Though my modified spade bit meant I pretty much had to guess where the hole was.

This is very old and slightly chewy marine ply. Sometimes the bit would lust tear a chunk out, look at the pic above showing the un-chamfered holes, that's where the bit went IN! If I had drilled all the way through it would take a massive chunk in one great big tear. Not much I could do except drill from both sides but super happy with the result anyway.

I'll measure the sizes of both tomorrow.

Looks like shuttering ply rather than marine ply, try clamping a gude bar to the sheet if you want neat straight cuts. That 1955 Vickers name plate is nice and the spot welder tips are smart.

Thanks, came out of an old shed then stored outside. It did occur to me that if I was going to spend so much time in construction, I ought to start with top quality material but that sort of defeats the object. If everybody was able to reuse found material and put it to good use for a second time, we would chop the use of the worlds diminishing resources in half.

Plus of course I am cash poor and therefore a bit tight.

TBH sbf, I'd never lend out a tool bit and all your offer has done is to encourage me to buy some!

It is about time. Having tidied up the disastrous pile of bits I do have, looks like I really ought to invest in some new bits.

Having said that, I seem to have amassed a fair amount of very nice LARGE Dormer bits. They will look lovely in a nice storage system. Sadly, looks like it won't be a Bisley any time soon.

Not much of an update because for the last two days it's been exactly the same routine.

Grab a rotten old tray of random dirty tooling

Clean it out and individually wire brush each element

Organise into approximate size for metric and imperial. Make sure the right die sits on the correct punch, remove any stuck plugs.

Do it again...

Organise into their final resting place. Metric and imperial 2mm - 5mm + 5.5mm - 12mm and 3/64 - 1/4, 17/64 - 1/2.

Notice how the fractional inches are somewhat cumbersome? No? Ok, here's the problem, you are in a trance like state of robotic organising. You find a 29/64. Is that bigger or smaller than a 7/16? Then after a quick mental calc, you try to find the correct place to put it <above> 7/16 but you have to move a row of 13/32 to get it in and one of your 27/64 dies sits on a 13/32 punch. Now, what were you trying to do in the first place?

Unfortunately @Seadog isn't there to help, though I'm sure he's going to check this little story (it's probably wrong)...

So that's about 400 individual items sorted and stored (4 x 48, punch+die) out of a pile of a thousand. They get bigger from now on which should be easier.

Bit stuck with some of the larger tooling like the bending blades so I made a drawer after playing with the idea of a hanging basket type thing.

Tada. Done. Except I changed my mind during construction (a rare non-sketchup design) and made it too long by the thickness of both ends. So...

Damn, those big bandsaws are so damned handy I can't believe I ever did anything without one.

Better than the first cut I made during its construction. Better joint too.

It will be super strong and effectively get filled with solid steel so it needs it.

Does look a bit ropey but I have a perfect answer to that - it's a prototype! <proud>

Now that thought has occurred to me, I may actually end up building a few more prototypes. Especially when welding!

It's a simple shelf/caddy so the dividers are just nailed in place to accommodate some of the folder blades.

Weighs a TON but goes in easily enough. I am a bit worried about the handle being somewhat fragile on this should it ever get a knock but hey, prototype!

I now have the luxury of actual benchtop workspace.

Even the horizontal spaces around the flypress are looking a lot tidier.

No, I'm not kidding, that's a LOT better...

That particular configuration of spacetime where I have a tidy shed is such a low entropy version of reality, the probability of it ever occurring naturally is fantastically low, I therefore have to expend a considerable amount of energy to achieve it. Not only that but if I do manage to somehow reduce the shed into a low entropy, highly ordered state, it would of course become extremely unstable. Obviously that is why I have spent so many years planning this rather than actually doing it...

Thanks. I might finish these drawers in linseed oil but wax is a good idea. I may also need to reinforce the handle with a strip of steel formed around it. That's very lightweight pine, recycled old bedframe and it will split along the grain if you look at it too hard. If I make many more I might go all ply for them.

The machine is an ex-school Boxford CNC. Gonna sell it if anyone wants it. I think it really wants a Mach3 conversion to be useful.
