At least I'm not going mad and I did hear this shed tax carp.. I now have a summer house and a storage shed, everything else is a garage, I wonder how many.people will be having old 7.5 ton truck box containers on wheels up the garden now and I bet bunkers will be on the increase

Well they did "window tax" in about 1700 - you had poll tax riots in the 1990's - now talk of shed tax...

If you read it - the detail of the proposal @Ubique provided - it is not a shed tax....

It is a granny annexe tax...

Which is worse, no a vile idea - in my mind....

You turn you garage into a granny annexe - to house your Mother/Father or your inlaws - to ensure they get and eat three meals a day - when they can't manage living home/alone in there own house and it doubles your council tax bill.

Two full rates bills for two separate self contained dwellings on the same plot - plus don't let them do it - in time they will want to claim stamp duty twice when you sell the "two dwellings"....

And when I say "two dwellings" - I mean the "man cave" you lost - with lots of hard work and expense to convert it and move your Mother in Law into - to ensure she is fed and watered.

Whats next...? Dog kennel tax for "Rover" - Cat house tax for my ferral yard cat....

Bringing elderly relatives into your own home to be cared for - keeping them out of the over burdoned care system - should be rewarded not punished...

I have a share in my parents house - an old farm with old parlour and other outbuildings. At one time it was a Forge, which became a garage, which my parents altered many, many years ago into extra living space/annexe.

I can't help but be concerned that a govt whose only go-to it seems is to tax everything & everyone to death (when reducing taxation to stimulate Spending & get MORE taxes through a thriving Economy is surely better ) - is going to ensure that Property I want to help keep for my Daughter - gets stolen away by degrees. Frankly everything to do with it all boils my p***.

With the Inheritance Tax now imposed on Farmers & so much more - it seems that Policy now is to force the sale of any/all property assets through fiscal asphyxiation - so that every inch of land gets bought up by uber-wealthy conglomerates - the wholesale betrayal of the citizen in favour of an elite for whom enough is never enough, while the rest of us are just some inconvenient infestation to be pest controlled.

If you remove sources of revenue through privatisation, increase debt and therefore interest repayments, have mounting costs and don’t increase tax take then what are you supposed to do?
Asset stripping the country by selling critical infrastructure to foreign governments hasn’t gone particularly well…..

Cut costs by reducing services, and look to increase the tax take in as fair a way as possible is about the best they can do.

We seem to have a press that will attack the government for cuts to public services and for any change to taxation.

This isn’t about taxing sheds its self contained living accommodation with sleeping space, a kitchen and a bathroom.

I agree of course.... but it seems now the intensity and pressure to ruin us utterly, has been turned up to DEFCON 4. It seems all the mechanisms have been steadily & stealthily manoeuvred into place (or nearly all) - & the day is rapidly approaching when the "Endgame" Trap will be sprung, & it's all over.

Never understood why a little old lady living in a big house should pay more than seven people living in a smaller house, she uses less of everything a conciliar provides.The councils and the people they serve would be a lot better of if they cut the flannel, sacked all the chair polishers and concentrated on staffing essential services like they did forty years ago.

Careful common sense isnt allowed in these matters. Besides sacking all the chair polishers would increase tax burden as so many of them are unemployable in the real world.

Be interesting to see how it's interpreted.
E.g. the "annexe" on my folks place had a kitchenette and a sitting room space, and a mezzanine type "bedroom".... but the bathroom is shared and accessible (via a door either end) as it's was essentially the downstairs bathroom of the main house - and an extra dirty was added to provide access from the annexe.
The cynic in me says I know which way that would go!
