Shed build & flooring advice (cement)

For anyone who is following or interested in this build.

All four square's are concreated and hard, ive given the inside a rough white coat but it all has had two coats of wood treatment first.

I have layed over the concereate 3/4 ply right through as I hate concreate under foot, also warmer and nicer to sit on incase I need to work off the floor. Been treated both under and ontop, all precausions taken to prevent wood rot.

Still lots to do but running low on time, got to be done hear and there from now, two weeks I think, I hope. So will have plenty of time for the concreate to go off solid but feels tough under foot.

Yes I know, 3/4" ext ply for roof and floor is overkill but I had 15 8x4 sheets already to hand and only cost me £200 total delivered, im trying to use all the material I got here. Couple more coats on the walls & roof and should look bright and clean.

I realy dont like cold concereate under foot or to sit on, always get those occasions where you just got to work on the floor even led down working. When brushing the wood treatment on working back I was sat down all the way back and never felt cold like when I was doing the caliper on the RD sat on the concereate.

Another update, just won on ebay near me a whole load of Pilkinton Doubble glazed glass. Going to have FULL side windows, 4 meters x 1/2 meter total, that should let loads of light in Just need to make the frames on my next day off.

Total orriginal build cost/budget was about £250. So far ive hit just over about £500, finish cost should be about £650 ish but similar size sheds to buy new are up over £1.5k and flimsy with still a floor cost involved.

Just a quick update for all those who have been asking me, here is a pic and write up following:

I know it dont look like much have been done since but its always the small jobs that take ages, also not getting concecitive days of work so just a little bit at a time.

The roof:

Now has a covering of box profile fiberglass, cost me £35 delivered for 17 sheets all used and most broken here and there but more than enough for what I need. I am going to get some fiberglass tissue and run it straight down the middle of the box profile to seal it all up, already got alot of resin left from my 3D fishtank build.

Had major problems with roof screws & caps, found Box Profile screws but when I tried to use them they were useless, wouldent grip in the wood, then thinking most Box Profile is Steel, only had today so time to impervise, used normal wood screws self taped in with a dollop of Silicone at each mountain point and siliconed over all the screws. Not the best idea but all I could do given the time and materials I got.

The Windows:

Pilkinton doubble glased, OTT I know, little posh for a shed/workshop but I had a whole load come my way, £11.50 It was all sorts of sizes that I had.

Problem was I had four sheets all the right size and would have finished it nice but putting the third sheet in I managed to tap it a little hard and crack the glass, still had loads of pieces here but not the same size and thats why its not even with the windows. All siliconed and beeded in place.

Other little things:

Used expanding foam to seal up a few parts and gaps, moved the outer rear pannel so I can have all my work benches, Mill, Lathe down one side and bikes on the other. Plenty of room to work on things and even bike ramps/lifts.

Things left:

Seal up the two sheds together 100%
Fiberglass the box profile down the center
Make a door 3' wide, may swing or slide not sure (access for the bikes)
Front original shed needs a side wide 3' door (access for the bikes)
Bench work but not untill I sell my Lathe and buy a new Mill.

Space needed:

Bikes are the main thing, want loads of room to have upto three bikes to work on and upto two on benches.
Mill 100% wont be industrial size, will be the largest Hobbiest Mills that are avalible.
Lathe, will 100% be a bench size, may join the following Myford group of people and buy an ML7 or Super7. They should be plenty for what I need along with the Mill.

Not realy an update but a few pics of a little clean up. Still waiting for some material to finish and also some time off work which just never seams to be happening. I know its rough round the edges but im not a chippy, joiner, builder or anything realy just a good bodger

Also ive had a little bit of luck with the Smart & Brown, put a wanted add up for a top sadle compleate with cross & compound slide and one has turned up, just waiting for it and the lathe will be sorted out Had a good look over the lathe today and apart from the sadle etc it is in realy good condition compaired to some I have seen so think I maybe glad someone dident take it off my hands.

Mill side of things. Missed out on a Tom Senior, been looking out for a small knee Mill but nothing local. Im giving it probably about one more week for the right one to turn up or im going to order a new one, not decided on which one to go for if I do get a new one yet.

Just a sugestion...
Look for some insulation for the roof, will stop the condensation from forming on the painted boards, and is also warmer in the winter/ cooler in summer. Use some 25mm mineral board (celotex/kingspan), about £8 a sheet from a builders merchant, it will make a massive difference.

Just a little update:

I bought a Mill after, I went for a brand new Warco Major. Not a good pic but hear it is and also building a bench out of a couple of trollys with some box & angle to brace it together.

The Mill is huge, much bigger than you can imagen from the Warco website. Two of us managed to get it onto a flat trolly and just about got it upto the second part of the shed.

Now I thought my Smart & Brown Lathe took up some room but this dwafs it. It is over a meter square, if mass is the key thing for a Mill then this thing is well upto most jobs.

Reasons I went for this Mill just incase anyone is looking like I was:

Second hand an old Warco would be about £500, hire a van + fuel £100, no tooling £100, Day of my time about £58. Saving a warping £250 for no waranty, not delivered, hard work, old and worn.

Or I could have keep looking for an old industrial knee Mill with enough bed travel for another year or so.

Why Warco and not Chester / Axminster / Amadeal / Toolco / any other same Chiniese supplier. Well there price on this machine beat the others, the price you see is the price you pay to your door, been selling this particalar machine for over 30 years, they have been in buisness a long time and handing over most of my hard earned cash that cannot be replaced to somone that could go bust / problems / well needed a little confidence on who I was buying from.

Hounestly no need to be, ive only this year been back in work and over the years been promising myself a little workshop, been without money for so long when I started back in work me and the wife hardly touched my wage so lucky enough to save it up. Almost skint now, after its all finished there is tooling and that is going to set me back around £300 just to get started.

Still if I get any good over the next few years thats a new skill ill have and hopfully start to earn a little cash from it.

Another little update:

Yesterday had two people helping me to get the Mill upto the bench, what a waste of time, the Mill sliped on one occasion and they both were moaning so told them to just go and leave me to it.

Today I rang around all the Hire shops, all shut so no engine hoist avalible. So my and the Father inlaw took our time inch by inch balancing on blocks and a small 1 ton bottle jack and we got it in place and all bolted down. Was so much easyer with two people taking there time and knowone moaning or wanting it done quick so they can ****** off.

Just bench work, electrics & a good sort out and projects can commence

100% They have been braced in a fair few places also sat on box section and also there is a large piece of 10mm plate underneath it. Could do with a couple of little more braces but over the years ive had over a ton & 1/2 on benches ive built. Yep they look rough but they do the job

That lot looks seriously wobbly mate. Those cages look like they are on their way to folding up.

100% they are not, its partly how the pic is, the floor is not 100% level, the shelfs that originaly are there dont sit straight and move and that is what makes it look like that, if I took the shelfs out would look compleatly different. All the moving parts that would originaly have been welded up with also angle welded to brace it at most of the joints, sits on box 25mm box setion with 10mm solid plate. Its 100% not buckling, looks the same with or without it sat on there, the Mill is about 300kg. I am however going to do more work on the frame to tidy it up and it will all be inclosed then this will again make it even stronger. Would take over a ton in weight easly.

Also what is the old saying, inch of weld 1/2 ton in weight so with everything solid thick sections eps under the bace of the Mill no problems.

Hi Busa,

I have to say I'm with the others on this. I know you say the base is braced up etc but there is a bit more to it. The base should be considered part of the machine. Yes the base might take the weight but its not about if it will take the weight, its about of it will take the weight and do the job in hand as a base for a machine tool. The answer to that in my opinion is it wont do the job sufficiently well or safely.

Machines vibrate, the more familiar you get with the machine the more you want to speed up the boring process of chomping out metals. The braver you get the more vibration you will get. Remember when i mentioned that mass/ weight is good? That rule still applies. The vibration from the machine has to go somewhere, a decent base is a great aid to absorb that resonance, through the machine tool to the base to the floor and into the ground. Keep in mind that resonance is a great way to break welds by fatigue. Your current base will have not a lot of welds holding it together due to to size of the material. Bracing or no bracing the mass is simple not there to do the job.

Remember you will spend hour after hour at this machine year in and year out. My advice would be to consider the base you have now as a pure stop gap until you can make something up better. I would make a base out of 3" box at the minimum, preferably 4", with the same box used as cross members directly under where the machine is bolted. Brace the stand lower down with the same box. A nice steel table top would also be preferable and bolted through to the box. I would also like to see a much larger perimeter around the base of the machine, something like 4".

Bolt the machine base just enough to prevent movement and no more. You don't want to be putting unnecessary force in the base by bolting it down dead tight, especially if its not on a totally flat surface.

I am actually worried for you if you use that base as a permanent fixture.

I don't plan on bolting down to the floor but I suppose I can see the future issue. Gess I could use it as a stop gap for now and see how it goes, if then I think its not quite there I can always slide a bench in place. I have ran the Mill etc and does hounestly seem solid but not done any cuts as of yet.

My main thing though is to finaly get all the work benches & shelfs built as I have so much stuff stored around the house and also got no workspace for anything.

So tomorow off work and its the above to sort out, lots of little odd jobs. Got two weeks of in July, not long so if it is an issue then could spend a day or two cutting and welding some box section. Ill have space also to do more.
