shall i keep me shaper

I've been clearing my storage shed out today to make room for a new trailer. I had to pull out my Newey shaper, it must have stood there 10 yrs at least.
Although i am unlikely to do anything with it at the moment it seems a shame to scrap a lovely old British machine.
Although i have 2 milling machines a Tom Senior and an Elliot omnimill i still feel i should hold onto the shaper although i have never used one.
Does anyone on here run a shaper and if so is it worth holding onto...................Magnet

I have a shaper its not used on a regular basis, but I would never part with it, the only draw back is ..shapers tend to be messy little beasts the chips fly off on all directions, but for generating truly flat surfaces they cannot be beaten, also the tooling is very simple just basically square high speed steel which is easily re-ground, I used my shaper last night to square up some steel blocks, the finish was superbe

I had one I sold it without doing much on it.....I decided if I needed something in that space it would have to be a Mill....lol

Please don't scrap it you may be surprised at the enthusiast following they have. I have one and love it, I don't want to bother buying a mill and find I can do things with it very simply with no cost tooling, and the finish is second to none!

Any info on set up tooling etc would be appreciated i forgot to mention somewhere i have a perfecto bench shaper that i paid penuts for in the dim and distant past but again never used

You can't mill a square keyway inside a bore on a mill, I think that's the only thing they can do that mills can't.

Don't you dare scrap it.

You just need to fit a slotting head instead of the vertical head like the one below.

and if u have a bridgie vertical mill the attachment costs nearly as much as the second hand mill thats if u can find one the last i saw was 160 quid and that was a bargain

This tangential tool holder is the first thing I made from scrap on mine (apart from the holes),

no practice just got stuck in, using a shaper is just like using a straightened out lathe, no extra skills to learn and use the same tool bit grinding, HSS only as tungsten hates an interrupted cut!
