there as accurate as a mill and so can the finish be .some people obviously have never used one or they wouldnt be saying that. it depends on what tool u are using and how fine a cut and speed u travel at just remembered the name of one i used at college here it is a butler .a real machine and fast http://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...-manufacture-shapers-planers-slotters-238278/the 1st thing i made on shaper was the base for this on the shaper at 17 years old and the rest on a harrison lathe at college

Spiral bevel, hypoid, all the same

Technically not all the same, the shafts on spiral bevels gears would intersect if continued forward, hypoid gear shafts do not.

Well I bet toolmakers are thinking balls I need to cut 0.02mm deep 4mm wide vents in a tool so best get the shaper out.

MattF I must admit I was in a bit of naughty mood that night.

We were barely allowed near the mills at college but we got to use the shapers more than I would want. Perhaps that's were my hatred of the things stems from?

Maybe I need therapy, spend some time with a shaper on my terms

Like I say, I've never had the pleasure of using one personally as yet. I might well come to detest them too if I actually ever use one. It's the getting one to test myself with which I seem to have the problem with currently.

Yeah MattF they don't even have tool changers let alone heat shrink collets!!!!

I tell you now don't think about wearing flip flops and shorts round one either.

You know Gritineye jokes all apart I have the upmost respect for the guys who have tradition skills. It's nice to know that there are people still using even shapers out there.

My biggest client I often have conversations with him about skilled toolmakers. He really struggles to get true skilled labour, so many guys have either retired or left the industry when the Chinese market hit hard. So he is taking on apprentices now. CNC is only half the story the guy needs to be able to get out in the toolroom and use the traditional kit to.
