Sewing thread

Got a sewing machine last week, from Lidl.
Repaired/improved about 30 items so far, quite happy with it, but now have a problem, it almost instantly jams. I've cleaned out the bobbin case/holder and rethreaded many times. A youtube video said to check for burrs on the hook part, as it seems it may not be releasing the thread properly, cant feel any. Diamond filed the edges smooth just incase. Other YT's were not helpfull and my tails are long, not getting sucked back into the bottom.

You may be able to see the problem here, but why is it happening?

Tried a few different items/materials and its happening on all, Im using an old cotton T shirt to test with. I have kept the bobbin hook/bearing surface lubricated.

I have even looked at the instructions What is wrong?

Is the needle being threaded from the right direction? That one caused me some grief in the past.

Try some thinner thread and make sure you have the same thread on your bobbin and the bobbin is the right way round. T shirt material is not the best for practise as it's stretchy, get something stiffer.

Yeah this has a threader built in, a bit fiddly to use but impossible to get that bit wrong.

I may have fixed it! It seems the bobbin tension had increased?! So I've loosened off the screw a little bit. I would have assumed the opposite would naturally happen

Thats what happened to me. My grandson had twiddled it. I am glad you have a machine as you will no doubt be able to find some rolls of cheap canvas lol I have been trying and its like rocking horse poo.

By coincidence, I picked one up the other day too.

Was visiting my ex and she said do I want an old Singer sewing machine.

Glad I said yes. It's mint! Seems to have all the accessories, manuals and even the receipt! Pictures don't do it justice though it will need some refurbishment in the wiring where the insulation has turned to snot.

Tee shirts are knitted not woven , apparently makes for less fun sowing them (I think it helps if you have some sort of faceing fabric on it but not totally sure). You need an over locker now



Have you had a check for burrs in the thread path or tried the spool in the other way round ?

I've rescued quite a few elderly singer machines and got them going, they're built to last forever really. They work very well, tho I prefer the hand cranked option to the elec motor.. I mainly use them for patching up boiler suits

@Kram - have you tried a new needle. Sometimes they bend slightly which messes up the auto threading.

think yourself lucky. My better half treated herself to a new Brother sewing machine, All bells and whistles. It went back to the shop SIX times in three months! Won't tolerate cheap thread, bobbin holder had a very slight scratch ion it so it picked the thread up in the wrong way, Auto threader bent. All 'user error' apparently. How I kept my temper I will never know

My wife banned me from using her machine as I was too rough with it so I bought a £5 Newhome machine on a flea market and used it for a couple of years then I treated myself to a new Toyota which will sew through 5 layers of denim, big improvement.

I got piss3d off with mine and it's in a corner somewhere. I bought it to do leather it even came with a walking foot, but I rarely got a decent stitch out of it.

If it is a walking foot model and is correctly timed it should be fine. What was it doing, problem wise?

Its's been a while, but either the same as Krams problem, it locks up. Or the top stitches, but the bottom thread doesn't (it spools out but doesn't create the stitch.
