Get on and play with it. I can find you some scraps of various materials to stitch if you like? Getting used to the tensions etc is the first battle, so using different materials will help.

seam sealer on the back of the stitching to stop the soggy bum syndrome?

Started my sewing course at the college in Monday evening. First time using a machine and went well. Teacher is really good and everything went well for my first time. I was the token bloke in the class. 1 evening a week for 12 weeks.
And now I know what's what I set my sewing machine up last night and did a bit of practice.

as you might have figured out some men do sew on sewing machines or are aware of them
oh and other half is going to give you some as your so going into a ladies sewing class
fftopic: Dad was an apprenticed tailor for several years till he joined up aged 18 in 1929 , he did wonders on Mums old 1947 Singer hand winder & taught me the basics . I helped him motorise it in 1965 , he gave me a Buttericks book of machine sowing in 1970 when I got married as I'd picked up an early Singer treadle that had variable stitch length and tension for 10 bob that had been converted to handle & put in a box .
Upon his demise in 1985 it came to me which I had it till 2007 when another tailoring relative left me a nice Jones zigzag fancy thing upon her demise .
Ex wife was given a basic brand new Jones machine in 1973 she never bothered to try to use . So I made no end of clothes for our newly born daughter , made curtains , stuff for reupholstering a German three piece suite etc. .
In HMF 1969 to 1980 I used to do all my own alterations where possible so I looked neat & tidy instead a member of Rent a Tent Inc.
Made several shirts & tailored clothing for[FONT=Verdana,Geneva,Helvetica,sans-serif] [/FONT]myself & adjusted ladies clothing for some of the " interesting" lady friends my e wife had 
. 
I didn't dare put my hobby / interest of making clothes & dresses for the family on any of the forms I had to fill out whilst in HMF.

I bought some cheap 501 Levis from the charity shop and realised I didn't like the button fastening so I altered them to zip with my machine. I mentioned it to a mate of mine and he asked me to do his as well. I do leg alterations and other bits and bobs but I haven't made my own clothing yet.

I will alter jeans and trouser lengths when needed after I do this course.
