I'm a bit worried I've been pushy talking about the dahua cameras and telling people what to do

I don't mean to be overbearing, I spent ages reading up about cameras and trying different system/cameras over the years and it drives me crazy when I see people recommending bad cameras or systems - luckily it's good here with lots of people having tried different cameras etc... on other forums it can be a mine field, people believing the lies in adverts about cameras/systems.

that said, if anyone here is around or passing through the sunderland area they're more than welcome to have a look and play with my cameras to see what they think :-)

No I appreciate it, last time I looked into it was several years ago, spent a few weeks reading all sorts of conflicting information. POE IP based cams were a fortune so it was all the old fashioned type and the horrible AVR boxes with the dodgy english writing. You have saved me a ton of time by condensing it all in this post! I want to have at least one camera for pan tilt zoom and it looks like the Dahua do one of those also! Cheers

I keep looking at pan tilt zoom cameras but they're a bit pricey for me, plus I'm never really watching the cameras when I'd want to zoom in on stuff

the cameras come with a 12v jack, so you can power them without POE... you can power them with a 12v phone charger type plug.... just mentioning incase you want to buy one to test and play with first, see if you like it :-)

(I've got some I haven't installed yet, I'll happily send you one to test out and play with before you order your own)

Sorry to add to this thread.

I am just wondering if someone can help me with issues on an oldish AVtech 4 channel Mpeg DVR system, it only seems to record when I am actually connected to it it's one with max of 4 cameras and they are not IP based but video, it has got to the stage where I just do not use it now.

Yes that's the type, sorry for the delay but I decided to get up some ladders and try to take pictures in the loft space of mine.

I have an IP link to a computer where I can run Video Viewer, it only seems to record when I am in it. It sort of gaives me the impression it is meant to be monitored all the time.

I have discovered my super cheap cameras are all on the same IP address and I can't login to the camera via browser to change, no ports open to ssh to and the vendor helpfully sent me some chinese instruction manuals and software that don't work either. I bought them ages ago so can't send them back. Going to dismantle one to look for a debug port or something. However contrary to what I said - don't buy that particular cheap camera!!!

A lot of the IP based cameras require Java enabled browsers to connect to them, have you checked for that?

Yes tried everything. All the thing does is downlaod a file which says 404 file not found. I have internet explorer configured in a highly unsafe way so I could access my old Dell server remote access card, which is the same config.

I keep trying variations on the (in)security!

I have the manual, it just does not make any sense to me.

If I view it showing all 4 inputs/cameras at once, when it detects movement in camera 1, it records all four inputs and that is how it plays it back. It If I select camera 2 to view and there is movement in camera 1 it does not seem to record it.

I think at some point I will go to IP based and start to run my own Linux style server/client based system.

If you know these systems and are able to check my settings I could provide access to the viewing computer via teamviewer?

you need to go into settings on the dvr for each camera set to record constantly

or to record at movement

if i remember correctly

if your system is using motion detection it can cause issues

i moved onto a much better system with 16 channels on it instead and i have 2 of them plus another 12 type camera system setup

Yes it is set for motion detection to the best of my knowledge and I have the area blanked containing trees and bushes.
Under Remote Config:
3 cameras connected
In the camera settings there is a tick box for record these are ticked, contrast brightness etc are all 128.
In the detection settings
DETECT ON, LS 7, SS 3 , TE 2 and RE 10
Record section is set for Event record only. Manual and Timer are both off
Record timer not selected for either routine or motion but have tried them both on.

Under Record Setting
Only Motion has been selected and every hour for every day is selected on the week blocks.

Went out through the cameras this evening to get a take away and I am not on the cameras.

I will try and see if there is any firmware updates to apply or anything but I think the linux route may be the easiest, wonder if there is anyway to reuse the video mux's on the AVtech box?

I found onvif device manager on sourceforge

It connected to my cheapie cam and let me change the IP address.
