Sectional Doors Vs Roller Shutter Garage Doors

So which is best? My existing garage door looks about 50 years old and is is need of a total refurb or replacement. I'm favouring replacement with electric operation.

Any thoughts on which type is better and a suggestion of where to buy. I'll fit it myself.

Had a company out to look at mine only suggestion was a roller door externally mounted. The sectional doors require quite a wide pillar to mount the mechanism and my electric incommer/meter blocks one side. I'll watch with interest the replies.

i have 3 hormann insulated sectional garage doors at mine prefer than to roller shutter personally

I have a hormann side hinged, the paint chips off after 4 years, response from Hormann- "well send you a touch up kit".

Think about ventilation, if you like to have the door cracked open to get some, up and over allow you to do so without letting in the rain.

the joist for the roof in between the two doors will be in the way for internal roller shutters , external will stick out too much and I dont think you have the hieght for it tbh

The lower edge of the door Lintel is at 78" & the "case" tops out at 90"

Been happy with it for the last 35 years...might need a new motor soon

If you can go with a roller door, you will gain overhead clearance and or storage space above if needed.
When my garage door was installed, I noticed a considerable amount of draft coming in from the gap at the lintel, so I solved the issue by installing a strip of rubber backed carpet to ride over the roller. Gravity seals the gap and it works a treat; well worth doing. Here is a rough sketch and a couple of photos.

You dont need the roller in some types of sectional garage doors, I got a quote for them for my barn, and they had a curved section at the top of the opening, and a section after that ran along the pitch of the rafters, and stored the door in the rafters when open. No roller present.
Might fit better...

you can have both on the new type of doors



that door is sectional whilst also being like a roller shutter door the track runs at the top it can also be cracked open at the top

I think from memory you need 300mm square above the door if you want it flush with the lintel but you can have it protruding below if you need to.

Looks very like mine - been fine for a decade.
5m wide - I did add some brackets inside that engage with some in the floor that I put a pin through to secure it from being lifted/ pushed in to some degree.

My thoughts, I fitted a sectional door, you loose headroom, but you get a nice tight fitting closed door, the roller doors leave a big gap at the top once there closed on the doors I have seen, maybe and not in your case if you could get the roller high enough the guides would keep the roller door in place better and keep out the snow and wind.

Its quite a compromise and I can handle it in the garage at the house bit I m not sure I'd want the sectional door in a workshop unless it could be pulled up the roof pitch.

I have one garage with roller, one with sectional, I much prefer the sectional, faster and nicer looking imo. Both Garadoor, neither have had issues apart from roller popped the small controller fuse a couple of times. Both also on Apple home via a Meross device so I can open them with my watch or Siri, very easy and convenient.

Only just took a photo of the sectional as just fitted the charger…

With the low headroom an external boxed roller will do it. You can even fit the box higher than the roof if needed as they are fully enclosed. I changed the cover screws to stainless antitamper with stainless Rivnuts on mine just to keep the opportunists out.

There's no ID on it and it's so long ago I'm not sure, but think it was a Cordova. The radio was upgraded to 433Mhz many years ago as the govt changed the band allocations, but had no problems for over 30 years.

That was going to be my suggestion - but then realised that central pillar divider is holding up the twin beams supporting the roof . . .

I had a closer look at my existing doors today which have been getting increasingly difficult to close and worked out what the problem is.

Daylight at the two outer corners of both doors.

Overlap on the two inner corners.

Means that the pillar in the middle is rotting out at the base and dropping.

I will need to fix this before going any further.

Any suggestion of the best way to splice in a new piece of timber. I'd prefer not to have to remove the existing doors to do it.

dont repair it buy a new a steel galvanised post or i beam with bolt plates welded to it

your post is supporting the middle beams so your going to need to acrow them and lift them to install the new post

you have alot of weight on that middle post and that holds the roof up
