Some good suggestions so far, I would avoid anything French or Vauxhall.
Interestingly, although probably not to anyone else, in over 25 years of driving I've never once owned an automatic, or a diesel car for that matter. Not sure all these recommendations are taking into account the request for an auto box
Ford Powershift: lots of failures reported
Dsg box: lots of failures reported and fitted to quite a few makes
Diesel/petrol decision depends on likely annual mileage and journey type
+ MercedesAnd don't forget that Nissans have Renault engines......
Hi folks
Missus wants to get a loan for up to 10k but I'm thinking much lower as even stuff priced that high is failing according to reviews.
Cheers, Bry.

This is the problem trying to find an automatic these days, so many have gone to semi automatic boxes basically a manual box with 'robotic' clutch actuator and in my experience these are rubbish with astronomical repair bills when they go wrong. Not sure who makes a decent auto anymore ?
Think of rather go in for 10K than mess about with rust buckets!
^^^^ A Sierra or Granada aren't modern in any way! They will be rust buckets and a total time drain!
Sorry, l slipped up with the wording, by auto I just meant automobile..
Anyway had a foray into the car supermarkets today saw a 15 focus estate, so went and had a test drive, nice motor, did all the usual tyre kicking, went and sat down to talk about it. Spent the next hour or so with them trying to sell me finance, told them I had everything arranged but it was like buying double glazing, in the end I managed to get the a print out of the HPI as they thought I was signing.
It showed these anomalies.
On the 28 November 2015 it did 5426 in one day ..?
Then 7 month later June 2016 2847miles.
Then 2 years later by July 2018 18645
Then from July 2018 to July 2019
It does 1972 miles
Them from 30July to 16 Sept 2019 it loses 491 miles.
After pointing this out the manager said it was probably typos, cars go in for service and garages might say "oh I think it's done say1500 miles," and put that down..
They really tried to make light of it and tried to assure me that the car had a string of stringent tests that it passed. I walked away.

Good point, although I already have a 2 grand van to keep on the road and not enough time..i wouldnt have even gone in, to be honest.
i'd rather have a 2k car, and 200 quid a month to sort out "niggles" - which if you pick the right one, will be minor.
for that budget, i'd buy a lexus ls300 for about 1k, and spend the 200/mnth on petrol.
but.. to answer your specific question, no. the small mileage discrepancies wouldnt bother me:
theres lots of reasons why it wouldnt tally up, none of them worrying as long as the VIN matches, and the condition is ok.

I am struggling with the concept of spending money myself but missus pressure and the fact that I have to pick customers up for work is the problem.
I hate buying vehicles.
I walked away.
