Seam sealing and stonechippin'

Hi guys,

Just a quick post to make sure I'm on the right path and ask for a little advice before I proceed further (and make another mess! ).


I've stripped back, cleaned and applied two coats of epoxy primer to the underside of my spitfire....

Both coats went on within an 18 hour window, both applied by brush. Next, later this evening I plan on seam sealing.

So, my questions:

1. I plan on using UPol Tiger Seal as a seam sealer, is this ok too use?

2. Over this I'll be applying Upol Gravitex Stonechip; I assume the best route is to dust a coat on, let it flash, then go on with a proper full coat?

3. Over the stonechip I plan on applying the cellulose base coat. What is the mixture ratio for the paint/thinner? Is the first light coat thinned more than the last coat?

tiger seal is fine

id just go with normal coats of stonechip..doesnt really matter as it shouldnt upset the epoxy

50/50 with the paint , no real need to go thinner on a floor pan ?

Great, thanks. I'd assume four coats or so would be sufficient on the floor, should all coats be 50/50 mix? Thanks.

Don't forget to scuff the surface a bit for both the seam sealer and stone chip. Oh and panel wipe after scuff.

yeah i would ...or if you need to ajust the ratios then so be it , doesnt really matter as long as its covered as the epoxy is doing the protection

I always think when you get some epoxy on you get that feeling that you have got somewhere.

You have that huge area now covered in epoxy, looks nice, it's protected and the welding etc is all finished so you have got to be happy

maybe try a test patch with the stonechip , i sometimes thin it down with celly thinner to make it a bit smoother

Its been a longgggg slog but things are starting to accelerate a little now! Suppose when I remind myself of how it looked last year I have lots to be happy about!

Good grief, did the Bomb Squad boys take it apart for you? Impressive rebuild . I had a few problems with Upol Gravitex Stonechip when I first used it over Epoxy Mastic 121 as the Schutz gun supplied had a faulty nozzle. It went on really thick so the thinners couldn't flash off properly and started acting like paint stripper peeling the Epoxy Mastic 121 off back to the metal. Once stripped back and repainted (ballache!) I applied a couple of light Gravitex coats thinned down through a spray gun letting it dry before using the Schutz gun and had no problems.

Hah, cheers. Bomb squad would have been a welcome addition at times to blow the bloody thing/s to kingdom come. No, in this instance a bloody big grinder was used

I think to be safe I'll dust on a light coat first and let it flash......dont want anymore scabby or peeling bottom! :P

Restoration I'm building the car around an original doorhandle


Well I put on the stonechip yesterday evening. Scuffed up the epoxy blew off the dust, cleaned with panel wipe and then a final wipe with a tack cloth. Sprayed on a light dusting first just to be sure.

Let that flash off for 20 mins or so, then, with no ill effects in sight it was on with the proper coats. Turned out well. Used three 1lt bottles and could have done with a little bit more, but, its grand. No reactions, blisters, cracking or lifting 12 hours later!

^ Little bit coarse in areas, but, over all I think it came out well. I'll give it a couple of days, another quick rub with some scotchbrite and then lay on the color coats.

I used the grey U-Pol Gravitex, three one litre bottles of and a Sealey SG139 'Schutz' gun.

Yes good man have the u-pol gravitex already so all good on that front just unsure on gun so shall get myself one now . What kind of psi do I need at the gun ?

About 65-70psi worked fine for me.

Had the bottles sitting in hot water for half an hour or so to soften the contents up a little which helped to, you can thin it out with up to 5% thinners if desired.

Looks good spitfire.

Using a tack cloth after the panel wipe probably isn't 100% necessary with stonechip.

TBH I would have been amazed if there was a reaction with say lechler epoxy primer and the gravitex.

I would say if any reaction is going to happen it will be top coats on top of the gravitex now. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen.
