don't have one, they take what they like when they like with no consequences, wrecked the front entry door, internal door, workshop door, took the safe and some tools, quite a while ago now, but they came back just to check for another safe, police came took finger prints, foot prints oh yeah ripped the alarm off the wall internal and external, took me 5 mins to get there after call from alarm no one to be seen 5 workshops done 4 with alarms, and as usual no one caught

really sorry t hear that mate. Im mobile engineer with everything in van prob totaling up to 15k at times and in rural area! my first line of defence is dont let em see it from road side (hide) and after that hook or bolt it to the ground so ive got chance to defend it. cheers andy

the problem is what ever you make to try and defend what you own, you never test your own security devices to destruction like a thief does.
we had the pikeys come around looking for scrap and when the roller door is up you cant stop em looking in.
in your situation there isn't a lot you can do if they get the van started they are off and an easy job it was to remove you gear

true! defending property is hard and something i dont want at the mo, having worked for a number of outfits that have been broken into over the years. van security is max inc isolator, alarm, blocking in and limited fuel unless you know what your doing, dont want to tempt fate writing this so going offline now Andy

As far as vehicle theft and hijacking is concerned, I have an idea that I may get round to testing in the new year. I will not disclose how it would work, but briefly, hijacker / thief would get so far up the road before finding that the engine has become very unreliable and cutting out, before grinding to a halt. The legitimate driver would not have to do anything but be in the driver's seat to prevent it cutting in. No PIN, no key, no switches of any sort. I designed it in my head after reading about the £30K Volkswagen van stolen recently because the idiot driver left the keys in it. Insurance will not pay out of course. My idea would still work in that scenario.

I used to have a tracker interactive on a Subaru I had.
I was the best spec available at the time. I bought the car off a mate and he was an audio and alarm fitter so got the best.
It had a sim card in it and GPS chip and if stolen, it would text message the cars GPS co-ordinates every 60 seconds. And the car could be immobilised remotely.
BUT. they were only allowed to disable the car once it was stopped as turning the engine off when the car was travelling was deemed too dangerous and could cause a crash

The american Onstar system can be fully controlled remotely. They can flash rear lights to identify the car to police and all sorts of things. I believe they can reduce vehicle power too but I might be wrong.

I worked in car security in the early 90s when car theft was rife and alarms cost a bomb. People wanted to fit security but were put off by the price so we devised various cheapskate options: one of the simplest was the cuddly toy trick... magnet inserted in cuddly (you can guess where ), reed switch glued to underside of dash somewhere. Place toy in right place on dash, switch closes, car starts. Park car, throw toy in back seat, who'd think to look at it? Of course it didn't always have to be that complicated but people liked the idea

Ironically, one car had the window smashed and the cuddly nicked


Some immobilisers were designed with no key or fob: you got in the car and pressed certain of the dash switches (fan, wipers etc.) in a certain order and the immobiliser would disarm.
We used to envisage the tea-leaves sitting there randomly poking buttons and pressing pedals on the off-chance they could hit the right sequence...

How about a mousetrap type device, a roller shutter old Luton van box, put something that looks of value, when they try to nick it, it keeps them in for an hour or so, damn that door got stuck scenario, ahem

Back in the 70's when car radios were fitted under the dash with a couple of self tappers they were usually just ripped off the dash by reaching under grabbing the back and pulling. One of my brothers workmates had two car radios nicked in short succession this way so the third he fitted was bolted in really well with a piece of wooden batten on the rear and half a dozen twin edge razor blades screwed on. Within a couple of weeks he found the car door open and quite a lot of blood but still had the radio!

I bought a stereo with DAB radio for the office and it wasn't having the crap signal we have around here so I thought I would fix it today. I put an FM dipole, cut down to favour DAB signals, on top of a 34mm OD scaffy pole. I used scaffy pole as I had a bit knocking about and I had some scaffy handrail brackets kicking about. I ordered an extra bracket for a couple of quid with a tab on it to mount a PoE IP camera I got before Christmas. Its a Huacam HCV822, works very well, better than the Foscam I got before and the DAB radio is very happy too . I've got to go back up and tidy the cable a bit and the fly leads on the camera are ridiculously short however they all seem to be like that.

Next scumbag control is to weld A252 mesh (8mm2 x 200mm) behind the yorkshire boarding on the downstairs barn. They cut throught the timber last year and ruined a perfectly good security door, but didn't get through it.

Poor lighting lets so many cameras down. A good rule of thumb is you must be able to read a newspaper while stood in the area you wish to cover. If you can't then you need more light, be that Visible or IR. Just be aware a lot of IR light emit a dull red glow, thus giving away the fact you have covert CCTV.

However none of this is any good if you don't get good ID of the person. Either because of distance or the height of the camera. So here is an almost foolproof way of making them look straight into a camera whether they know it's there are not....

You'll need to install a small sounder, preferable one that makes a whistle noise, it doesn't need to be loud, infact just audible.

Place this as close to the camera as possible, with whatever type of trigger best suits the environment, to fire the sounder off.

How it works: We (humans) instinctively look towards any sort of noise, and in some cases will cause the trigger to walk upto the "noise", staring directly into the camera. Bingo you now have a clear shot of....


(This method was developed by some big PLC that needed their workforce to look into a camera when walking into restricted areas, locked doors were not working as the door can be held open by a keyholder for non-authorised personnel.)
