I worked for an ERF Trucks agent in the late 80s on the parts desk. I regularly let the mechanics my side of the counter to look at the fiche. I then went on to sell car parts mainly using catalogues in the early 90s and then onto computerised systems later. I always let the customer have a look at the books or the screen if it made life easier for both of us. Parts guys are not all tools, just most of them. Lol.That’s the usual reception I’ve got in the past.
Recently as these things are more online it’s not so hard to find out what you need, but ‘back in the day’ when it was all fiche and paper parts books it was all very closely guarded. I never did work out why.
