That’s the usual reception I’ve got in the past.

Recently as these things are more online it’s not so hard to find out what you need, but ‘back in the day’ when it was all fiche and paper parts books it was all very closely guarded. I never did work out why.

I worked for an ERF Trucks agent in the late 80s on the parts desk. I regularly let the mechanics my side of the counter to look at the fiche. I then went on to sell car parts mainly using catalogues in the early 90s and then onto computerised systems later. I always let the customer have a look at the books or the screen if it made life easier for both of us. Parts guys are not all tools, just most of them. Lol.

I would prefer it if there were screwfix and toolstations shops were they had all the stuff out on display and you could check the quality and fill up a shopping trolly and they go and pay for it. Sometimes its hard to tell what they are selling from just a picture in a catalogue and poor description.

Isn't that called B&Q?

The whole point of screwfix etc being they can keep costs down and carry more stock by not having pretty shelves and millions of dithering people wandering around looking at paint and wallpaper on their day off.

It takes a certain personality to be a parts bloke.

Usually a complete lack of one.

Normally if you dont have the personality to be an undertaker…

It was the same at BL group dealers when I went in for Land Rover parts, I would always get a parts manual for whatever model I had so could go in with the part numbers, but still had to wait for the ones who expected the staff to look up parts for them.

It's the same in the fish and chip shops now.
You head in with a couple of customers in the queue, and the staff make up god knows how many orders. Half for collection and half for delivery.

It used to be like that in Chinese and Indians but it's becoming a pain now.

We used to have ERF the first gardner turbo models, we had six, four on the road one in the workshop and one against the fence waiting to go into the workshop, it was one fitters job to keep them six crapots on the road!
Then we got some 6x4 models again with gardners 15litre Iirc with belt drive compressors, then MAN bought them out and it was all downhill from there on.

I liked the catalogue. The websearch needs you to know the exact name of what you want.

They probably sell less too, how many folk scrolling through the catalogue see something and go I need one or two of those as well.

Don’t see the problem really … no different to Amazon or eBay or a myriad of other places… Argos springs to mind immediately

There's a rather large tarry brush being used here.
My Dad was a "parts bloke" (his title was stores manager but there was only him), firstly in a Jaguar/BL garage then in aToyota dealers. He most certainly was not the dullard being portrayed here. He also was known for his helpfulness and had an encyclopedic knowledge of BL parts. He was pretty good on Toyota stuff as well.
