I just click and collect - so much easier. No faffing about and you know it is in stock and what the latest price is - scan the card, pick it up, done.

No offence, but it does get on my wick when you are stuck behind somebody who is holding everything up thumbing through catalogues at the counter and/or trying to describe what they want to staff who neither know nor care.
Thought that was kinda the point of the trade counters, so we could get in and out quickly...

The trade counter side is usually staffed by more knowledgeable people, and I usually knew exactly what I was going in for

That reminds me of standing in the queue at our local Ford dealers in the late 60s on a Saturday morning that never had a trade counter , all of the diy guys with their cars workshop manual trying to describe the part they wanted! Many hours of my life I won’t get back

There will be old screwfix catalogues advertised on the bay of thieves My mate was in there the other day and walked out because of these pads, he can just about answer his phone so there is little to no hope of him navigating a pad.Luckily for him there was a toolstation around the corner.

I ordered an 1800mm radiator from Toolstation as a collection as they don't hold them in store, what a total ball ache!
They first sent a text saying it had been delivered but it hadn't.
When it did turn up it was battered to death by Tuffnells monkey delivery driver "oh yes they always do that" !
The next one I got a text that it was ready to collect, I turned up and it was the wrong size!
On the 4th attempt they got it right!!!
Totally useless but I couldn't get the size I wanted anywhere else.
I'd say Screwfix are far better.
I do miss the chicken soup from the machine in Toolstation though.

The trade counter side is usually staffed by more knowledgeable people, and I usually knew exactly what I was going in for

In the two local branches I use, the staff float between trade and standard counters. In the smaller branch they actually step three feet either way and serve both.
They will usually pull the duty manager on to trade if they get busy, not that they necessarily have more of a clue than the lasses on the tills.

I don't mean any disrespect to the staff - I'm sure some are very knowledgeable, and I've always found them friendly and helpful - I suppose my point is they aren't paid to be experts on the products they sell.
They need to find the code numbers to put onto the bill anyway, so it saves everybody time and effort if I already have that number ready to go when i get to the till.
Different in a wholesalers, but then they sell a more specific range and I suppose they have to know more about what they sell, although not always the case in my experience.

It doesn't work like that around here. At least not in Toolstation. Screwfix is slightly better since I have a Plumbfix card. But that section is very often closed.

There are 7 screwfix’s within 12 miles here, but I’m making an effort to get orders delivered rather than going to fetch, saving in time and fuel cost.

It was the same at BL group dealers when I went in for Land Rover parts, I would always get a parts manual for whatever model I had so could go in with the part numbers, but still had to wait for the ones who expected the staff to look up parts for them.

In the early 1980s the Honda dealer I bought parts from treated part numbers as slightly less than ultra top secret. A request to look at the fiche and point at what you needed, was met with a shaken head and sucked teeth. Still he could lord it over us mere amateurs.

That’s the usual reception I’ve got in the past.

Recently as these things are more online it’s not so hard to find out what you need, but ‘back in the day’ when it was all fiche and paper parts books it was all very closely guarded. I never did work out why.

I USE THE APP ITS GREAT AND WHEN THEY PING YOU TO SAY THE ORDER IS READY OFF YOU GO LOG IN ON ARRIVAL IN THE CAR PARK USING THE APP, BY THE TIME YOU GET IN THE BRANCH STUFF IS READY ON THE COUNTER, WORKS A TREAT.

I wish, the staff in Chesterfield seem to busy with people in the que to worry about click n collect from the app, just end up waiting for the next slot in the que.

Car park app collection is a waste of time at this store...

I was in there yesterday ordering a couple of bits, I found the tablet to be soo much easier because it has a search function!
No more flipping back and forth between the index and product pages.

I remember one in a Ford garage when I wanted oil seals for a type 9 box - couldn't work with aprt numbers, needed the car registration . . which was a bit difficult as the Q-plated kit car didn't come up

Next time I saw him, he was a greeter on the door of local BnQ . . .

Whereas the guy in the local Fiat place was extremely helpful sourcing Lancia parts for me . . . shame the sales guys weren't as good, as the place is now a large sit-down chip shop - the customer gents is in the same place as the parts dept downstairs . . . I often wonder if the lifts etc are still behind the roller shutters out the back . . .
