A second vote for a cheap electric/hydraulic splitter. Mines green and calls itself "handy" and is apparently rated at 6tons but I bet they're all much of a muchness.
They're quiet, safe and way more powerful than you'd think.
I've been really testing it recently with some gnarly oak some ~18" diameter. You can stall it but it's very impressive for size.
I can't emphasise enough how nice it is to work indoors with no fumes and not much noise. Money well spent.
