I purchased a gearbox it came next day delivery BUT the damn linkage bar has been bent....looks like before it was sent as it was packed well..

Waiting to see what the seller says later Today as its from ebay.

Well the plan was to fit the whole gearbox as it was 150 quid.

Then strip the 5th gear parts out of mine and see what needs replacing.

Not keen on paying 150 for a second hand gearbox with bent input shaft....the interesting is they have marked a couple of places with green marker.....one of those places is the housing where the shaft goes in to the box......seems a bit of a strange coincidence to me.

i would be sending it back if it had a bent input shaft. that's well knackered. marking over the bits that come apart is pretty common as is marking the bolt heads, stops you swapping in your knackered internals then claiming their box is duff and getting a refund.

a guy on facebook called 'ron saab leeds' was where all the saab owners were getting their bits from as he seemed dead cheap.

Yeah but to be honest it does look fairly central and 90 degrees to the oil seal. Its when comparing it to the one in my car it looks bent.

The green spots dont actually cover the 5th gear cover so i could strip those parts and send the gearbox back but i am not like that. Its almost like someone has highlighted something is not right..

It could be adjustment of the selector arm. If not it will be the 5th gear hub can be replaced in situ and I think it is a cheap part.

My new daily is a 9-3 Vert so into this !

It might be a cheap part but the two you listed dont have the parts. Saab parts dont deal with those parts Neobrothers say tbey only supply second hand ones and they are specifically matched to codes on that box.

So its looking grim now.

err do you mean linkage/selector shaft or input shaft - it seems to have changed...
Hopefully it is the former !
Might it's appearance just be relative to the gear the box is in?

The selector shaft (i called it input shaft) as it takes input from the gear stick. Lol

Its the one that runs through the bottom of that black plastic bracket.

But it stays the same angle whatever gear its in..

I know I asked this at the beginning but are you sure you have checked none of the linkages/ connectors have slipped, I seem to remember reading that there is a pinch bolt on the shaft that is prone to it - but it might have been fixed in your later model, looking at pics there seems to be a lot of joints!
Maybe put the box in 5th, secure the linkage and see if there is slop in the stick?

Also maybe post in UKSaabs lots of experience that way and a friendly forum too.

Just a thought but does it jump out on acceleration/ sudden foot off ? If so it may be the mounts - but then you would expect to see the issue in other gears too.

Yeah there is slop in the stick but its been like pudding since we got it.

It will not stay in 5th gear as soon as there is motion. Its fine when stationary. But it crunches like hell as soon as it moves.

Tonight we have taken the 5th gear set of the new gear box and tommorow i will take the end of the box off mine and see if i can see wear or damage.

Its a damage limitation situation as i cant find spare 5th gear sets anywhere.

Seems like a good plan. Don't want to be hauling the box out if you don't need to!
I had a good hunt around for you too and turned up zero, even looking at variations of the same box.

Based on replies here and elsewhere i think the saab needs to go due to parts availibilty. Anyway an update.

The gearbox we brought was broken..so we asked supplier to collect it. We were offered a partial refund instead. We fitted the parts from the 5th gear section and they all work fine so we accepted his partial refund.

I still think he "feels" we were trying to scam him but i would rather have had a box with 80k on it than 160k and would have fitted it had it not been broken. So i can hold my head up and still drive the car.

Yeah pretty easy. Lot easier than changing the whole gearbox in hindsight.

The main thing to take from it is as soon as it shows any inclination of jumping out of 5th you need to change the part (i think) before it actually wrecks the gear.
I think the fact the part with the clutch type material wore out meant any attempt to put it in 5th destroyed the metal teeth on the other gear.
