Yes it does have a return spring. Unfortunately there is no change in resistance when the wiper lever is moved. Pretty sure its FUBAR. I have been in touch with a few suppliers so I am still hoping for a result...........

I think your dead device is probably replaced by Vishays current offerings. 3.85 kΩ seems to be the only number of note and common to all of the model range. Everything else in the numbering is body type, mounting detail or lever type, no mention of different power handling, degrees of deflection or other crucial values. If you take the measurements of the lever, the body and mount spacings I think you will easily deduce what number to choose from the currently available using the datasheet. The lever looks like the "D" type, if the lever hole on your dead part is 5mm diameter and the pivot centres are 21.6mm thereabouts then that is the lever type.Yes it does have a return spring. Just to be absolutely clear about the test: The resistance between the ends of the tracks (Yellow and Green) is what is normally specified. If its the same as the one in the datasheet posted, 3.85k Ohms. (+/- 20%)
Measuring between yellow and red, or green and red should give a variation in resistance as the lever is moved.
However, note that (if it's the same as the one in the datasheet) there is a series resistor in the wiper circuit of 1.7k so measuring between yellow and red should give a minimum of 1.7k and a maximum of 3.85+1.7 = 5.55k
Yours has seems to be in the mega-ohm range so the wiper is (as you have concluded) FUBAR.

The potentiometer from AliExpress turned up much quicker than expected. I initially thought I had wasted my time after fitting it -I must be getting old cause my powers of observation isn't what they used to be... This one is opposite to the original. It starts on high ohms and reduces as the lever moves. I quick swap of the wires and all is working. Not sure how long it will stay working as copious amounts of hot glue was used to secure the metering wheel to the lever - oh well there is always super glue ..............
